23 February 2014 Skye Camanachd U14 suffered semi final disappointment in the 2014 North of Scotland Five-A-Side tournament at the Dalfaber Sports Centre, Aviemore on Saturday 22 February 2014. The tournament, which was won by the young Islanders last year, started at 12.30pm. The eight team event saw the sides all play eachother in a round-robin format before the top four teams played off in the semi finals. Skye got off to a good start when a Conor Gilpin goal gave them a 1-0 win over Glenurquhart. Next up was a meeting with Kingussie and a Ruaraidh MacLeod hat-trick and goals from Ross Nicolson and John Gillies gave Skye a convincing 5-0 victory. Skye followed this up with another 5-0 win: this time against Newtonmore. Ruaraidh MacLeod and Marcus Ross got two goals each and Conor Gilpin got the other. Skye were on form and they ran out 9-0 winners against Caberfeidh. Ruaraidh MacLeod grabbed another hat-trick, whilst Ross Nicolson also scored three times. Stewart Taylor bagged a brace and Marcus Ross got the other. Ross Nicolson scored twice as Skye swept aside Fort William 2-0 in their next game. Skye’s penultimate league match saw them concede their first goal in the tournament but they recovered to win 5-1 against Inverness. Ruaraidh MacLeod, Ross Nicolson, Marcus Ross, Conor Gilpin and Stewart Taylor were the scorers. The Inverness team were coached by former Skye Camanachd player Ewen MacKinnon. Skye made it seven straight league wins when they beat Beauly 5-1. Ruaraidh MacLeod helped himself to a hat-trick whilst Stewart Taylor and Conor Gilpin got the others Skye topped the league section at the end of the round-robin league games and they faced fourth place Fort William in the semi finals. Skye raced into a two goal lead thanks to strikes from Ruaraidh MacLeod and Ross Nicolson. However Fort William stormed back to go 3-2 in front. Ruaraidh MacLeod equalised to make it 3-3 but with just a minute to go, Fort William snatched the winner to leave them 4-3 victors. In the second semi-final, Kingussie beat Glenurquhart 3-1.
An epic final was eventually won by Kingussie who had led 4-2 against Fort William with just a minute to go but they were pegged back to 4-4 to take the final to a golden goal period. Ruairidh Anderson was the Kingussie hero as his superb strike seconds after the restart saw them run out 5-4 winners and Kings captain Andrew Kennedy was presented with the trophy.
