Skye Camanachd Ladies Retain Sixes Trophy | |
18 August 2014 Skye Camanachd Ladies retained the Skye Camanachd Ladies Annual Sixes Shield after competitive day’s shinty at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 16 August 2014. This was the third year of the popular competition and seven teams – Aberdour, Dunadd, Glasgow Mid Argyll, Lochaber Lovat, Skye Camanachd A & Skye Camanachd B – lined-up for the 11am start. Skye won the tournament for the first time in 2013 – Glasgow Mid Argyll won the inaugural competition a year earlier – and the Islanders were keen to retain the shield. The teams all met twice in a round-robin league format with the top four progressing to the semi-final stage. The league stage finished with:
Both semi-finals could hardly have been closer. Skye Camanachd A edged out Aberdour thanks to a late Sarah Corrigall goal. The crucial moment of the tie came when Lorna MacRae and Sarah Corrigall linked-up before MacRae set up Corrigall to score the only goal of the game. The meeting between Glasgow Mid Argyll and Lovat was even closer; going all the way to a penalty shoot-out. Indeed the spot-hits went to sudden death with GMA converting the fourteenth penalty of the contest to set up a final meeting with Skye Camanachd. Skye Camanachd and Glasgow Mid Argyll are to contest this year’s Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup Final as well as fighting it out at the top of Marine Harvest National Division 1. This tournament matched them up at Sixes and despite goalmouth action at both ends, the final seemed destined for extra-time. However with seconds remaining, a defence-splitting Sarah Corrigall pass cause panic in the GMA rear-guard. Lorna MacRae controlled the ball but saw her shot saved. Izzy Law regained possession, almost on the goal line, and Lorna MacRae was on hand to force the ball over the line to make it 1-0. Lovat’s Laura Gallagher was deservedly named Player of The Tournament. The Skye Camanachd Clubhouse was open throughout which allowed the players to watch the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup semi-final between Skye Camanachd and Glenurquhart live on the Big Screen from 4pm. This was followed by a meal and Disco in the Clubhouse later in the evening. |
