Skye Camanachd Ladies 3 Glengarry Ladies 2 - UPDATED! | |
20 June 2013 The Skye Camanachd Ladies had a terrific 3-2 win over the Glengarry Ladies first team in the Valerie Fraser Cup quarter finals at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. on Saturday 15 June 2013. Skye Ladies Head Coach Sarah Corrigall had a strong squad to pick from as Lorna MacRae and Helen Lamond returned after missing the 7-1 win over Ardnamurchan the previous weekend. However Kristen MacBeth was a late call off. The Islanders, who play in WCA Marine Harvest North Division 2, knew that they would be put to the test by their WCA Marine Harvest North Division 1 opponents. Ilana Paterson got Skye off to the best possible start when she reacted quickest to score in the opening minute of the game. There was better to come for the home side when Lorna MacRae added a second almost straight from the restart. Glengarry were always going to respond and Laura MacKay pulled a goal back when she scored from a rebound to make it 2-1. Karen Cameron drew ‘Garry level 5 minutes later with a brilliant 15 yard strike which flew high into the net and the sides remained on level terms until half time. The Skye centre line combined well to set up Lorna MacRae and she scored what proved to be the winner early in the second half with a great drive which made it 3-2. Some superb saves from Skye keeper Sarah Corrigall kept the Islanders in front as Glengarry piled on the pressure. One save, just under the crossbar, kept out a rocket shot from ‘Garry’s Laura Gallacher and drew both gasps and applause from the crowd. Skye were always dangerous on the counter-attack and they held on to win the tie to the delight of the large crowd which had gathered around the pitch by the end of the game. Sarah Corrigall was a stand-out in goal for the Islanders whilst Emma Gordon also deserves a mention for her outstanding work-rate in midfield.
