Skye Camanachd A U14 4 Kinlochshiel A U14 0 - UPDATED! | |
23 April 2016 Skye Camanachd A U14 were 4-0 winners in their opening Local League match against Kinlochshiel U14 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Friday 22 April 2016. This 6.15pm throw up was the first game of the three-team Local League group which also involves Skye Camanachd B U14. The league winners go forward to Marine Harvest North Division 1 after the summer break with the runners-up joining the second tier. The bright sunshine and cool breeze made for ideal shinty playing conditions. Skye started strongly against a younger Kinlochshiel side, pinning the visitors back in their own half for long spells of the first half. Some excellent defending from Finlay MacRae at buckshee back and Duncan Matheson at full back kept Skye at bay with Dan MacDonald at full forward and Ross Gordon at buckshee forward both going close to breaking the deadlock. Skye’s centre line of Ryan Macaskill, Jamie Gillies and Mark MacQueen were dominating proceedings in the middle of the park and they fed the ball to wing forwards Abby MacLean and Gilleasbuig MacVicar to constantly set up wave after wave of attack. Skye broke the deadlock on 24 minutes when Ryan Macaskill fired the ball into the bottom corner of the net from the right-hand side. MacAskill’s low shot went through a group of players and seemed to leave Finn MacPherson unsighted in the ’Shiel goal. Ryan Macaskill then became provider for Dan MacDonald just 5 minutes later with a beautifully lofted corner to the back of the D. MacDonald delightfully controlled the ball in the air before going around two ‘Shiel defenders with a string of keepy-uppys and he volleyed the ball past a helpless MacPherson to make it 2-0. Skye Youth Coach Willie MacDonald made a change at the break with Holly MacLean taking over from Dan MacDonald. Skye began the second half the same fashion they finished the first period and Mark MacQueen went close in the early stages. It was Ryan Macaskill once again who set up the third goal on 38 minutes with some tidy stick-work and he played a through-ball to Ross Gordon who went on to score. With Skye making changes – Archie MacDonald for Jamie MacKay on 45 minutes and Niall MacPhee for Gilleasbuig MacVicar on 50 minutes - ‘Shiel managed to get the ball into the Skye half more often but it took until 51 minutes for them to get a shot on goal. Some good play on the right set up Archie MacRae in space. He got his shot away only for it to go narrowly wide of Murphy Henderson’s left-hand post. Gilleasbuig MacVicar had a goal disallowed when he was adjudged to have kicked the ball. On 72 minutes, Ross Gordon hit an unstoppable shot into the back of the net after some tidy passing around the ‘Shiel D. But, much to the dismay of the Skye support, and after consulting the goal judge, referee John Angus Gillies chopped off the screamer, ruling that Abby MacLean was offside. Abby MacLean made amends just 3 minutes later when she followed in on a Niall MacPhee shot and her cool finish made it 4-0 to complete the scoring. Skye played well as a unit and they can take a great deal of confidence from their first match of the season. Some excellent defending from ‘Shiel’s Finlay MacRae and Duncan Matheson in particular prevented Skye from winning by a bigger margin. .
