Skye Camanachd 7 Aberdeen University 0 | |
19 March 2014 The Skye Camanachd second team got off to a winning start as they beat Aberdeen University 7-0 in their opening Marine Harvest North Division 2 match at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 15 March 2014. Senior players John Angus MacInnes and Angie MacDonald have taken charge of the side with Donnie Martin assisting from the sidelines. John Murphy was included after an absence of a number of years and he started on the bench. Shaun Hedley also made a welcome return to the squad and he was handed the full back shirt. David MacInnes captained the side and he took the field at full centre. Games with Aberdeen University are always close encounters and the Students continue to be managed by former Skye Camanachd player Jamie Beaton. However they travelled with just twelve players and their absentees included John Sweeney and Brian Slattery. Former Lochcarron player Kieran Murray line-up for the Students. This 2.35pm throw up was both teams first competitive match of the season following postponements last weekend. There was a strong wind swirling across the park which made it difficult for both sets of players and the recent rain made for heavy conditions underfoot. Skye set siege on the Aberdeen goal from the throw up but for all their chances, they failed to cause too much concern for Aberdeen University keeper Scott Moffat. Angie MacDonald looked to be Skye’s best chance of a goal and he had a few efforts which went wide of target. Skye moved Shaun Hedley to full centre, DJ Gilpin went to full back and David MacInnes dropped back into defence. The Students suffered a blow on 37 minutes when former Beauly player Greg Tillman and David MacInnes challenged for the ball midway inside the Skye half. Tillman was accidently caught by the end of MacInnes’ swing and suffered a gash just below the eye. The Aberdeen player was treated by Skye medics Dr Wilson Banks and Helen Gilpin, with the latter accompanying him to The Portree Medical Centre where he received five stitches to the wound. This created a problem for the visitors as they didn’t have any substitutes and they played the remainder of the match with just three forwards. Skye continued to press and the made the breakthrough a minute before the interval when Ally “Viewfield” MacLeod pushed forward on the Skye right and he swept the ball over Scott Moffat’s right shoulder unto the net to make it 1-0. Skye attacked from the restart and they doubled their advantage through and Angie MacDonald snapshot. Skye started the second half where they left off the first and they were 3-0 ahead on 47 minutes when Angie MacDonald again fired home. Angie MacDonald completed his hat-trick on 51 minutes as the home side stamped their authority on the game. Skye gave their remaining substitutes a run out as John Murphy came on in attack to replace Angie MacDonald. Ally “Viewfield” MacLeod moved to full forward and Stephen Murchison replaced Thomas Wilson in midfield. John Murphy made an immediate impact and looked lively down the Skye left. It was Murphy who got a goal on his return to the side on 61 minutes. Ally “Viewfield” MacLeod made a forceful run down the right wing and he crossed the ball to far side of the D where Murphy thumped the ball into the back of the net for Skye’s fifth goal of the afternoon. Ally “Viewfield” MacLeod got his second and Skye’s sixth with a turn and shot on 68 minutes. Ally “Viewfield” MacLeod became the second Skye player to bag a hat-trick on 85 minutes when he poked home a ball down the middle from Shaun Hedley to make it 7-0. The game was played in good spirit although Aberdeen’s Joe Folan picked up a late yellow card from referee Rab MacAskill for a rash swing which caught Ally “Viewfield” MacLeod across the back of the legs. It was a tough shift for Aberdeen but they were served well by David Fraser, Joe Folan, Willie Hunter and Kieran Murray. Paul MacKinnon, Shaun Hedley, DJ Gilpin and hat-trick pair Angie MacDonald and Ally “Viewfield” MacLeod were best for Skye.
