Skye Camanachd 4 Glengarry 1 - UPDATED! | |
18 September 2015 The Skye Camanachd second team are close to winning the Marine Harvest North Division 2 title after they beat nearest challengers Glengarry 4-1 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 12 September 2015. Skye Camanachd second team manager Davie Pringle included Kenny MacLeod, who was back from injury, at full forward whilst Ryan Morrison took over from the unavailable Jamie Gannon in goal. Glengarry were in second place in the league going into the game and they are Skye’s main challengers for the title. Boss Ewen Cameron travelled with a strong squad and he welcomed Highland League footballer Daniel MacLennan back into his line-up. This 2.30pm throw up was broadcast LIVE on radio and online on Cuillin FM’s Camanachd Live Show and Skye played towards the Struan Road end of the ground in the first half. Skye had a set-piece opportunity after 3 minutes when Kenny MacLeod was brought down on the edge of the D by Shaun Sloggie. Kenny MacLeod flicked the free-hit to Iain MacLellan who took a touch but his shot rose over the bar. John Gillies sent a first-time shot wide of goal after being set-up by John Angus MacInnes after 8 minutes. Daniel MacLennan sent in a good cross from the ‘Garry left on 11 minutes but there were no takers and the ball was cleared by Neil John Campbell. Gordon MacDonald saved with his feet from John Gillies on 14 minutes and Shaun Sloggie got the ball away with James Pringle looking to get on the rebound. Kenny MacLeod almost benefited from a miss-hit clearance a minute later but his shot hit the side-netting. Daniel MacLennan shot into the side-netting as Glengarry launched a rare attack on 18 minutes as the light rain continued to fall. Glengarry’s James Barron was hit just under the eye by the ball from close-range and he was left with a cut which required treatment. Barron came off, replaced by Stephen Brady with 20 minutes played. Skye continued to keep the pressure on the visiting defence and it was no surprise when John Gillies fired them ahead after 26 minutes. The goal came following an Iain MacLellan corner on the Skye left. Kenny MacLeod sent a bouncing shot goalwards and although keeper MacDonald stopped the initial effort, John Gillies thumped the rebound into the net. Neil John Campbell was spoken to by referee Willie MacDonald after he tripped Daniel MacLennan who had burst down the ‘Garry left on 35 minutes. Glengarry enjoyed a period of pressure late in the first half and Ryan Morrison in the Skye goal made a fine save with his feet from a Daniel MacLennan drive and David Grant cleared the ball from the rebound. For all Skye’s pressure, they were only a goal ahead at the break. Glengarry made a good start to the second half and Daniel MacLennan collected a John MacKinnon pass before shooting over from 20 yards. Skye were made to pay for not adding to their first half lead when Steven Cameron picked out Daniel MacLennan who turned his marker and headed goalwards. Ryan Morrison saved MacLennan’s initial effort but the forward got his caman to the rebound and he levelled with just 4 second half minutes played. Skye boss Davie Pringle went for the more direct approach at the interval, introducing Angie MacDonald in place of John Angus MacInnes at full forward and MacDonald made an immediate impact as he put Skye back in front on 51 minutes. MacDonald took a touch which took the ball by Mathew Clark and he ran in on goal before slipping the ball past Gordon MacDonald to give Skye a 2-1 lead. Glengarry had a chance to level for a second time on 55 minutes when Daniel MacLennan played in John MacKinnon on the right but he sliced his shot wide of target. Angie MacDonald got his second to make it 3-1 with a terrific finish on 56 minutes. James Pringle slipped the ball to John Gillies who sent it high into the ‘Garry goal area. MacDonald took the ball down with his back to goal and he moved to his right before shooting home to make it 3-1. John Gillies made a lung-busting run forward a minute later and he managed to round the keeper but the angle was too tight and the young forward was unable to hit the target. Angie MacDonald completed an 11 minute hat-trick when he made it 4-1 on 62 minutes. David MacInnes played the ball down the Skye right where MacDonald took a touch before giving Gordon MacDonald no chance with a blistering shot from a tight angle. Daniel MacLennan and Andrew Gilchrist combined to cut through the Skye defence a minute later but an important challenge from David Grant saved what looked like a certain goal. Daniel MacLennan broke forward again on 68 minutes but his effort went wide with Ryan Morrison carefully guarding his goal. A Daniel MacLennan shot rose just over the top a couple of minutes later. Glengarry’s Martin Cameron replaced Andrew Gilchrist in attack on 72 minutes. Skye made a change with 14 minutes with Thomas Wilson taking over from Calum Gibb in midfield. A bouncing ball forward from Thomas Wilson – his first touch of the ball - was deflected wide for a Skye corner. Angie MacDonald came close to getting his fourth on 78 minutes when his rocket shot came back off the post. Glengarry made their third change with David Noble taking the place of Shaun Sloggie a minute later. A Kenny MacLeod shot went wide of goal and as play switched to the other end, Ryan Morrison made a great save from Stuart Gregory and Neil John Campbell cleared the loose ball with 81 minutes played. Ryan Morrison showed why he had just been selected for the North U17 squad when he denied Daniel MacLennan a minute later. An Angie MacDonald shot looped wide after good lead-up play from John Gillies with just 5 minutes remaining as the action continued. ‘Garry keeper Gordon MacDonald blocked an Angie MacDonald shot a minute later and James Pringle was just unable to steer the ball goalwards following the resultant goalmouth scramble. The final whistle takes the Skye Camanachd second team a step closer to the winning the league and they now just need a point from their final two matches – away to the Inverness seconds on Saturday 3 October 2015 and at home to Boleskine a week later - to be sure of the Marine North Division 2 league title and promotion to Marine Harvest North Division 1.
