Skye Camanachd 4 Bute 0 | |
15 July 2019 Two of shinty’s island sides, Skye Camanachd and Bute, clashed in a Mowi National Division encounter at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 13 July 2019, with the hosts winning 4-0. Skye Camanachd first team co-managers Allan MacLeod and Kenny MacLeod were missing a whole host of players with Ally MacDonald, John Gillies, Iain Nicolson, James Pringle, Stewart Grant, James Morrison, Ross MacKinnon and Marcus Scott all unavailable. Will Cowie went to full centre and Sam MacPhee debuted at wing centre. Bute were also weakened, travelling with just twelve players and minus a number of regulars including Iain McDonald, Ryan Craig, Craig MacKay, William Boag, Aaron McKirdy and Chris Lawrence. Player / manager John MacCallum was at full back. This 2.30pm throw up was broadcast LIVE online and on radio on Cuillin FM’s Camanachd LIVE show. Skye attacked from the throw up and it took two terrific stops form Bute keeper Kevin Queen to keep the match scoreless. First, Queen made a brilliant save with his club, above his head, after Jordan Murchison flicked an Iain MacLellan pass in the air and volleyed the dropping ball goalwards. Queen then did well to turn away Sam MacPhee’s strike from the right which was going in, high to the keeper’s right. Skye made the breakthrough on 14 minutes following some lovely one-touch shinty down the left wing and Daniel Morrison exchanged passes with Iain MacLellan before flicking the ball low into the net. Skye scored a second a couple of minutes later. Sam MacPhee found Daniel Morrison on the right and he played in Ross Gordon and, on his left side, Gordon’s shot went in off the leg of the unsighted keeper. Jordan Murchison then darted into the D to get on the end of Daniel Morrison’s cut-back from the right but his lofted effort came off the off the keeper’s left post. Skye added a third on 19 minutes when Iain MacLellan took Ross Gordon’s pass and beat the keeper with a fierce waist-high shot which went in on the goalie’s left side. The game then went flat for periods with Skye continuing to dominate but Bute never folded, with John MacCallum at full back, 14 year old Calum MacMillan, Scott Harvey and Craig Fisher all doing well at the back. Skye made it 4-0 with 10 minutes remaining as Iain MacLellan grabbed his second goal of the game. Martin Pringle won the ball in midfield, holding off a couple of challenges, to set up the move and when Ross Gordon juggled a ball from Jordan Murchison into MacLellan’s path, he drove home.
