Skye Camanachd 1 Kyles Athletic 5 | |
12 August 2018 Skye Camanachd lost 5-1 against Kyles Athletic in their Marine Harvest Premiership match at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 11 August 2018. Skye Camanachd first team manager John MacLeod recalled Iain Nicolson and teenagers John Gillies, Jamie Gillies, Ruaraidh MacLeod, Martin Pringle and Ross Gordon to the squad. Kyles Athletic forward Sandy MacKenzie was available again following suspension whilst Roddy MacDonald remained out but hopes to be on the substitutes’ bench this Saturday. Donald Irvine and Andrew King were missing but Grant Irvine started. The teams also played for the 2017 Thomas Ferguson Memorial Cup. Throw up was at 3pm and the whole match was broadcast LIVE on Cuillin FM’s Camanachd LIVE show. Kyles were 4-0 winners when the sides met at Tighnabruaich seven days earlier and they flew out of the blocks in this one, taking the lead after just 2 minutes. Sandy MacKenzie sent the ball out to the right where Grant Irvine crossed low for Gordon Whyte, who had surged forward from the middle of the park, and he scored. Skye levelled on 8 minutes. John Gillies, playing at full forward, took the ball down and played it to Ruaraidh MacLeod who drilled a shot low into the net to make it 1-1. Robbie MacLeod put Kyles back in front on 20 minutes when he sent a bouncing 25 yard shot into the net after Skye had failed to clear a free-hit. Iain MacLeod saved twice with his legs in quick succession to deny Colin MacDonald and Robbie MacLeod. There was a touch of fortune to Kyles’ third goal on 38 minutes as Sandy MacKenzie’s effort from wide on the right took a bounce, deceiving the keeper, to make it 3-1 and it stayed that way until the break. Kyles substitute Ross MacRae made it 4-1 on 61 minutes, striking the ball across the keeper from the left following a series of Kyles Athletic corners. Skye substitute Iain Nicolson almost pulled a goal back but his strike went by keeper John Whyte’s right post and Whyte then saved with his hand from James Pringle. Dunkie Kerr saw an effort saved before Skye failed to deal a Scott MacDonald free-hit from the left during injury time and Robbie MacLeod hooked the ball into the net for his second goal of the game to make it 5-1. There was just enough time to restart the game before referee Deek Cameron blew for time.
