Skye Camanachd 0 Kilmallie 3 - UPDATED! | |
17 July 2013 Kilmallie beat Skye Camanachd 3-0 in their Marine Harvest North Division 1 meeting at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 13 July 2013. This was the third time the teams had met in Portree in recent weeks. Kilmallie won both previous encounters 5-0 and 5-1. Skye Camanachd first team manager Willie MacRae saw his side halt a run of four successive defeats with a draw against Caberfeidh and a win over Strathglass. Injury continued to rule out Danny Morrison, Ally “Spod” MacLeod and Darryl Macintosh. Jordan Murchison had recovered from an ankle injury and he took a place on the bench after playing in the morning second team win over Glenurquhart. Neil MacVicar took up the full back position as Steven Morrison was working. Injury also ruled out Kenny MacLeod. There was a debut for DJ Gilpin who had also played against the Glen earlier in the day. Chris Rose returned to the starting line up and Gilleasbuig MacDonald dashed up the road from his work in Glasgow to take a place on the bench for this 3pm throw up. Kilmallie manager Duncan Kelly saw his side rack up thirteen goals against Inverness the previous weekend. Martin Stewart’s switch from defence to attack saw him yield four goals however he started at full centre with Peter Carmichael switching to buckshee back to cover Michael Rodger’s absence. Defender Iain Robertson served the second game of a two match ban after he was sent off in the Balliemore Cup semi final defeat against Beauly. Liam MacDonald was also banned for the league leaders for a points accumulation. Mark Graham, Martin Graham and Ryan Stewart were also unavailable. Kilmallie keeper Kevin Toye came off his line to clear the danger after Chris MacLennan and Will Cowie combined early in the game for the home side. Then Skye custodian Aonghas MacDonald had to dart from his line to thwart Grant MacKenzie after the Kilmallie forward had played a one-two with Seb MacMillan. Kilmallie took the lead after 9 minutes when Seb MacMillan caught out the Skye defence as he played a one-two with Martin Munro before pushing the ball past Aonghas MacDonald to score. Skye responded and Chris MacLennan’s first time volley from an Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod cross from the right rose over the bar. Skye’s Will Cowie required treatment from medic Dr Wilson Banks after being hit on the chest following an Ally MacDonald corner on the left. An Iain Murray shot wasn’t far away as Skye looked to get back on level terms. Kilmallie had the chance to double their lead on the half hour mark when referee John Matheson awarded them a penalty for a kick by Neil MacVicar. The offence followed a John Stewart corner on the right and the referee pointed to the spot after consulting goal judge John MacIsaac and there was no complaint from the Skye defence. John Stewart stepped up to take the penalty. He hit the ball with force but Aonghas MacDonald made a superb reaction save with his caman. MacDonald made a second save from the rebound before DJ Gilpin cleared the danger and Kilmallie had to settle for a 1-0 advantage at the break. Grant MacKenzie had scored hat-tricks in his two previous appearances in Portree but he was well marked by Shockie MacLennan. However MacKenzie did find space on 48 minutes when he collected a Mark MacPherson pass and powered a bullet shot into the Skye net to make it 2-0. Skye introduced Gilleasbuig MacDonald at full centre with Chris Rose joining the attack and Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod withdrawn. Referee John Matheson yellow-carded Kilmallie’s Peter Carmichael on 58 minutes following a clash with Skye’s Chris Rose. Great play from Martin Munro set up a chance for John Stewart on 62 minutes but the Scottish international’s shot bounced off the post before the Skye defence scrambled the ball away. Jordan Murchison was a straight replacement at full forward for Iain Murray as Skye looked to reverse their fortunes. Ally MacDonald made a great burst forward but was just unable to get on the end of a Chris MacLennan ball at the end of the D. Aonghas MacDonald made a good save from a John Stewart half-volley with the ball cleared for a corner. Substitute Andrew McAllister replaced Jamie Morrison in defence for Kilmallie. A swerving 30 yard shot from John Stewart was brilliantly turned away by Skye keeper Aonghas MacDonald as Kilmallie looked to seal the win. They did just that when Martin Munro scored the goal of the game on 75 minutes. Munro, who was named in the Scotland U17 squad for their 2013 Ireland Tour, won possession and cut in from the left before sending an unstoppable 30 yard drive into the top left corner of the net to make it 3-0. Skye debutant DJ Gilpin came off with Iain MacLellan joining the attack and Chris MacLennan dropping back into defence. There was no further scoring and Kilmallie returned home with both points. DJ Gilpin can be pleased with his debut for Skye whilst young Martin Munro caught the eye for Kilmallie and visiting wing centre Liam Cameron got through a power of work throughout the game. Kilmallie now lead second place Beauly by four points but the Braeview Park team have two games in hand with the sides due to meet at the Canal Parks at the end of the month. Skye’s next outing is against Caberfeidh at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 27 July 2013. Fourth place Cabers currently trail third place Skye by three points but they have two games in hand. They play one of their games in hand this coming weekend against Inverness whilst the Islanders are idle so it is quite possible that the Castle Leod side will only be a point behind with a game in hand going in to the Portree match. The significance of a third place finish is that the top three clubs in the league are likely to qualify for the new national second tier next season.
