30 April 2016 A late Marc MacLachlan goal gave the Beauly second team a 1-0 win over the Skye Camanachd second team in their Marine Harvest North Division 1 encounter at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 23 April 2016. Skye boss Davie Pringle was forced to make five changes to the squad which narrowly lost to the Glenurquhart second team at Blairbeg last weekend. He was without Iain Nicolson and Chris Rose whilst Neil John Campbell was with the Skye first team. Youth players Jamie Gillies and Martin Pringle were left out. Will Cowie started at buckshee forward following his return form a period abroad. DJ Gilpin was back in the side after being part of the first team pool the previous week and there were places in the starting line-up for Ian MacPherson and veteran Allan MacLeod. Beauly boss Neil Brindle was without midfielder Sandy Tulloch and forward Rory Campbell but there was a place for Marc MacLachlan in attack as the striker looked to put his injury problems behind him. The Beauly seconds went into the match on the back of a 3-1 defeat to the Newtonmore second team and both sides felt they could take something from the game. This 2.30pm throw up was broadcast LIVE on radio and online on Cuillin FM’s Camanachd LIVE show. Skye played towards the Viewfield end of the ground in the first half. Ryan Morrison stopped a bouncing effort from Martin Davidson with his feet and he scooped the ball to safety as the visitors attacked from the throw up. A Will Cowie shot from wide on the right went wide of the goal on 14 minutes as Skye enjoyed their first period of sustained pressure. Beauly then forced a couple of corners when, first; Martin Davidson flicked the ball to Oran MacPherson on his right but Ross Nicolson defected the goal attempt for a corner. Kyle Stewart played the resultant corner in from the right and Martin Davidson laid the ball to Jordan Ironside but DJ Gilpin got the ball away. A Kenny MacLeod shot on the turn on 20 minutes went just by the post. Lee Dunbar did well to block a point-black effort from Kenny MacLeod mid-way through the first half and Connor Gilpin played the rebound goalwards but Kieran MacTavish cleared the danger A Marc MacLachlan shot from 35 yards out flashed across the Skye goal and although home keeper Ryan Morrison claimed he never got a hand to the ball, the visitors were awarded a corner. Beauly’s Marc MacLachlan, who had been spoken to by referee Daniel MacRae a couple of minutes earlier, was booked for speaking out of turn. Scott Martin replaced Stewart Taylor on the half-hour mark for Skye. Martin went to full forward with Kenny MacLeod switching to wing forward. Will Cowie picked up possession in midfield for Skye and he broke down the right wing. Cowie’s cross found Connor Gilpin at the back post but Beauly keeper Lee Dunbar came off his line and spread himself, diverting Gilpin’s cut-back away for a corner. Conner Gilpin sent a drive goalwards from the resultant corner wide of the top corner of the net and the first-half ended goalless. Skye boss Davie Pringle made a significant change at the interval with David Grant going from full back to full forward , Andrew Banks coming on to take over from Grant in defence and Scott Martin withdrawn. Skye created the first real chance of the second period and David Grant found space but and Will Cowie played the ball to him, Grant’s attempt at goal rose over the bar. Beauly made their first change on 55 minutes with Peter Dickson coming off in favour of Daniel Lamont. Skye’s Ross Nicolson came off on 62 minutes after taking a knock. Jack Henderson came on at wing back with Calum Gibb, who had been very assured in defence, moving to wing centre. Beauly player / manager Neil Brindle came on a minute later at wing forward in preference to Kyle Stewart. Good forceful play from Ian MacPherson saw him surge down the Skye right-side on 68 minutes. MacPherson picked out David Grant but his shot hit the side netting. Beauly immediately broke up the park and Ryan Morrison had to save with his feet from Martin Davidson. A turn and powerful shot from Martin Davidson was blocked and cleared by DJ Gilpin on 71 minutes. Beauly introduced third substitute with Calum Flynn, coming on for Oran MacPherson. Skye started to look more threatening and Kenny MacLeod, David Grant and Will Cowie combined before Grant’s shot was blocked by Kieran MacTavish and Cowie sent the rebound wide on his back-hand with 72 minutes on the clock. Play switched to the other end and Martin Davidson pushed the ball jut the wrong side of the post. Ian MacPherson was causing Beauly problems down the Skye right and when he found DJ Gilpin, he in turn picked out Will Cowie but his attempt was off-target, going wide of the keeper’s left post. Skye’s Kenny MacLeod needed treatment for a knock to the ribs as the match moved into the final 15 minutes. This was a game of few real chances and Skye came within a whisker of going in front on 81 minutes. DJ Gilpin spread the ball to his brother to Connor Gilpin whose cross-field pass sent Kenny MacLeod running down the Skye right. MacLeod passed to Cowie and he slipped the ball to David Grant on the penalty spot. Grant’s initial effort beat the keeper but came off the base of his right post. Grant sent the rebound goalwards but keeper Lee Dunbar saved and Will Cowie saw a flick from a tight angle forced out for a corner. A couple of minutes later, Will Cowie escaped the clutches of Beauly full back Kieran MacTavish but Dunbar came off his line to foil Cowie. The Beauly defence was living dangerously and Lee Dunbar did well to get the ball away as Will Cowie threatened again from the edge of the D as the match moved into the last 5 minutes.. A lovely run from Connor Gilpin saw him get on the end of a free-hit around 20 yards from goal but Gilpin’s flick from a tight angle on the left was deflected away from a corner. Skye were made to pay for the missed chances when Andrew Banks was penalised for double-singing and Beauly took advantage of the late set-piece opportunity when Martin Davidson touched the ball back to Marc MacLachlan who gave Skye keeper Ryan Morrison no chance with a fierce 87 minute drive which made it 1-0. Skye immediately went in search of a late leveller and Lee Dunbar palmed a Calum Gibb shot away for the safety of a corner. Beauly saw out the closing minutes, including 3 minutes of stoppage time, to take the points. Beauly move up to fifth place in the league whilst Skye remain at the bottom of the table; still looking for their first league point of the season.
