Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final ………….. 5 Days To Go! | |
09 September 2013 The Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final between Kyles Athletic and Newtonmore takes place at An Aird on Saturday 14 September 2013. Both sides joined the competition at the second round stage. Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup holders Kyles Athletic have had the more difficult passage to the final and it took extra-time to see off Kingussie at the semi final stage. Their route to the final was as follows:
Saturday 1 June 2013 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup - Second Round Kyles Athletic 1 Inveraray 0 This 3pm throw up at Tighnabruaich was a repeat of the 2012 final when Kyles won the day following an eleven goal thriller. Kyles had Calum Miller and Donald Irvine back to bolster their defence whilst there was a starting place in the Inveraray side for Russell McKinlay but David MacPherson was out with a hand injury. This time only one goal separated the sides and it was Kyles former Bute player Roberto Zavaroni who got the winner with a great drive on 36 minutes. Kyles had keeper Kenny MacDonald to thank for some fine saves as he kept the Inveraray forwards at bay.
Saturday 6 July 2013 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup – Quarter Finals Kyles Athletic 7 Beauly 2 A Roberto Zavaroni strike after 15 minutes put Kyles Athletic ahead against Beauly in their 3pm throw up at Tighnabruaich. Dunkie Kerr put the holders 2-0 in front on 23 minutes and Kerr got his second and Kyles’ third a couple of minutes later. Beauly pulled a goal back on 34 minutes through David MacLean but Roddy MacDonald made it 4-1 on the stroke of half time. Beauly’s Sean Stewart made it 4-2 on 51 minutes but the remainder of the game turned into the Roddy MacDonald Show as he took his personal tally to four goals with strikes on 53, 66 and 81 minutes to make it 7-2. This was a potentially tricky tie for Kyles, who had Robbie MacLeod free of suspension, but their overall performance demonstrated a determination to hold on to shinty’s top prize.
Saturday 3 August 2013 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup – Semi Finals Kyles Athletic 3 Kingussie 2 (after extra time) Holders Kyles Athletic are through to the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final following their 3-2 extra time win over 2011 runners up Kingussie in their 2pm throw up at An Aird. Kyles have players such as Grant Irvine, who scored against Fort William last week, and Andrew King, who was back in the squad, returning from injury as they look to add to the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup success already this season. However Scotland U17 defender Zac Coley missed out as he was on holiday. The Kings had Ronald Ross back leading their attack and Savio Genini returned from holiday. However Louis Munro is still a week or so away from completing a working trip abroad whilst Fraser Munro served the second game of a three match ban. Kyles started with the wind advantage and they had the better of the first half. However they couldn’t find a way through a well organised Kingussie defence. John Hutchison did a very close marking job on Kyles danger-man Roddy MacDonald and the poor surface made hitting difficult for both teams. Kingussie took the lead a minute straight from the restart and Ronald Ross was their familiar scorer with a tremendous shot from the left after he had collected a Lee Bain pass before beating two Kyles defenders. Kyles response was quick and a Thomas Whyte 30 yarder made it 1-1 on 51 minutes. There was no further scoring so referee Deek Cameron took the match into an extra time period. Savio Genini made it advantage Kingussie when he latched onto a rebound off keeper Kenny MacDonald to net on 96 minutes. Kyles were not going to give up their trophy lightly though and Colin MacDonald made it 2-2 on 102 minutes after he ran on to a ball on the right. Roddy MacDonald put Kyles ahead for the first time in the tie a minute before the extra time break when he beat Kings’ keeper Craig Dawson at his right post at the second attempt after Dunkie Kerr had prodded the ball forward to him. Kingussie threw everything at the Kyles goal for the remaining 15 minutes bit to no avail and it is Kyles Athletic - who are looking to retain shinty’s most famous trophy for the first time since they won in 1968 and retained it a year later - who go through to the final to face Fort William or Newtonmore.
