Scotland University Men’s Squad Named For Ulster Trip | |
15 January 2014 The Scotland University men’s squad has been named for the Shinty / Hurling meeting with Ulster University in Northern Ireland on Saturday 25 January 2014. Most Universities and Colleges across Scotland have representation in what is another strong squad this year. The squad includes Scotland U21 internationals Finlay MacMillan from Glasgow Mid Argyll, Newtonmore’s Michael Russell and keeper Robert Dunnings from Oban Camanachd. There are also places for Kingussie pair Louis Munro and Hamish Anderson and Cameron Keith from Kyles Athletic. The decision to take both the men and women’s squads to Ireland was made by coaches George Hay and Fiona Mathie who wanted to build on the successful Shinty / Hurling series of games between the Scottish University shinty teams and their British University Hurling opposition. Scotland men’s coach George Hay, who will be assisted by Newtonmore’s Paul MacArthur, said, “The challenge the Shinty squads face in their visit to Ulster University will be their toughest test to date. Ulster University has a very high level of Hurling and Camogie squads who can field players of both county and senior club standard. These matches will certainly require our current crop of University shinty players to perform at the highest level.” The Scotland coaches watched University league matches throughout the season and attended a competitive November 2013 meeting between the North University select and the South University select, which was won by the South, before coming to a final squad selection. The squad travel to Northern Ireland for an historic first meeting with Ulster on Friday 24 January 2014 and the match will take place on Saturday 25 January 2014 with the squad returning home the following day.
