Scotland U17 Beat Dublin U17 16-13 | |
26 July 2016 Scotland U17 made it two wins out of two as they beat Dublin U17 16-13 in the second match of their Marine Harvest 2016 Ireland Tour at Parnell Park on Tuesday 26 July 2016. Just as against Kilkenny U17 the previous evening, the Scots had to work very hard for the win. And also just as against Kilkenny U17, the Scots found the back of the net early in the game. The Scots attacked and, with keeper Josh Rooney out of goal, a Daniel MacVicar shot was cleared off the line by a Dublin defender but Lewis Montgomery drove the ball into the net from the right side to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. Shortly after, Lewis Montgomery again proved his worth as he took the chance to drive the ball over the bar from open play to add another point to the Scots’ tally. A tremendous dead-ball from Ian Richardson, taken wide on the Scotland left, sailed between the posts to make it 6-0. It got even better for Scotland when Iain Robinson turned a Daniel MacVicar cross from the left into the net to make it 9-0. Dublin’s Jason Byrne scored a couple of single points to open Dublin’s account. First, Byrne sent the ball over the ball after a clash in midfield and he then notched another point from wide on the right to make it 9-2. Scotland full centre Danny Kelly sent the ball between the posts from open play but the score wasn’t given by referee Thomas O’Cuinneagain. It wasn’t long before Scotland added to their advantage as Dublin keeper Josh Rooney was penalised for a challenge out of his goal. Iain Robinson sent the free over the bar to make it 11-2. A Cain Derwin point made it 11-3 but when Danny Kelly broke up a home attack and sent the ball forward, the Dubs couldn’t clear their lines and Daniel MacVicar found the back of the net to make it 14-4. Dublin were coming more into the game though and Cian Derwin twice sent dead balls over the bar, the latter from wide on the right with Scotland goalie Cameron Sutherland getting a touch on the ball to stop it going under the bar, to make it 14-7 in Scotland’s favour at half time. Dublin made a positive start to the second half and Cian Derwin got onto a Cormac Quinn ball into the danger area and he lifted the ball into the net to make it 14-10. Dublin’s Jason Byrne put a free wide before John Gillies played the ball up the Scotland left to Sandy Elrick and he drew a foul. Iain Robinson put the resultant free over the ball to make it 16-10 for what was to be the Scots only second half goal. Scotland were perhaps tiring after the previous night’s exertions but Iain Richardson was a power-house in midfield whilst James Falconer put in a lot of unselfish work. There was a flashpoint in midfield which resulted in bookings for Scotland’s Ross MacMillan and Dublin’s David Ryan. The Dublin fight-back continued as Cian Derwin lifted a free from left of centre before blasting the dropping ball low into the net to make it 16-13. Scotland captain Calum Grant did well to break up a couple of Dublin attacks, especially a dangerous Cian Derwin ball into the heart of the defence, as the hosts pressed to draw level. Scotland had a chance to increase their lead when Josh Rooney was penalised for a kick inside the D. However with the keeper and two defenders on the line, Robinson didn’t catch the spot-hit as he would have liked and his low effort was blocked. Scotland, who had lost Innes Blackwell with a hand injury, saw out the closing minutes and to secure a memorable win.
