Skye Camanachd lost one of their stalwarts with the passing of Sammy Gordon on Thursday 21 February 2019.
Sammy Gordon was one of the key figures in the Skye team after the club reformed in 1969. With Sammy at buckshee back and Iain MacDougall at full back, they formed half of a very robust defensive unit.
He was part of the Skye side which reached the 1972 Sutherland Cup Final in which they lost 2-0 against Ballachulish at the Bught Park, Inverness.
Sammy continued to feature for Skye as a strong, reliable defender until well into the 1970s. He always maintained an interest in the club and, in September 2017, he presented the Thomas Ferguson Memorial Cup, played in honour of his great friend Thomas Ferguson, after Skye beat Inveraray 3-0 in Portree. It was also the day Skye were presented with the 2017 National Division title and it was an occasion Sammy enjoyed.
He was made a Skye Camanachd Vice-President to recognise his contribution to the club.
The sympathies from everyone at Skye Camanachd go to Sammy’s wife Ishbel and the rest of the family.
Sammy Gordon’s funeral takes place at the Church of Scotland, Kensaleyre on Wednesday 27 February 2019. The Service is at noon and the Internment takes place at Skeabost Cemetery afterwards.
