Remembering Festubert ………….. 5 Days To Go! | |
10 May 2015 The shinty fixtures have been confirmed ahead of the Festubert Commemoration weekend in Portree which starts on Friday 15 May 2015. A weekend of special commemoration events take place to mark the centenary of the Battle of Festubert, one of the earliest and most appalling of all the battles in World War 1, and shinty will play a major part in over the three days. Many lives were lost, including in the shinty playing communities of Portree and Kingussie and the clubs have come together to remember the fallen.
Friday 15 March 2015 Portree Primary School v Kingussie Primary School Portree Primary School and Kingussie Primary School will meet at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Throw up is at 1pm and this contest brings together two of the game’s top youth clubs. At end of match Captain Robert Stoddard, SCOTS Camanachd, will present commemorative medals to all players. Skye Camanachd Ladies will provide refreshments in the Skye Camanachd Clubhouse after the presentations.
Saturday 16 March 2015 Skye Camanachd v SCOTS Camanachd The Skye Camanachd second team meet forces side SCOTS Camanachd to get Saturday’s shinty underway at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Throw up is at 11am and John Angus Gillies is the match referee. The players will be piped out onto the field ahead of a minute’s silence. After the game, there will be the presentation of commemorative medals to both sets of players and a WW1 statue, which has been donated but the North Skye Branch of the British Legion Scotland, to SCOTS Camanachd. Skye Camanachd Ladies v Badenoch & Strathspey Ladies Skye Camanachd Ladies take on Badenoch & Strathspey Ladies in their Marine Harvest National Division 1 encounter at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. There is added spice given that the teams will meet in the Valerie Fraser Cup semi-finals at the end of the month. Throw up is at 1pm and Davie MacVicar is the match referee. The players will be piped out onto the field ahead of a minute’s silence. Commemorative medals will be presented to both sets of players after the game by Lady Lucilla Noble. Skye Camanachd v Kingussie The Skye Camanachd and Kingussie first teams meet at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree to contest the John ‘Kaid’ MacLean. Throw up is at 3pm and John Angus Gillies is the match referee. The players and officials will be piped onto pitch along with uniformed SCOTS Camanachd personnel. This is sure to be a competitive encounter and Ronald Ross is expected to feature for Kingussie for at least part of the game. In the event of a draw at the end of the 90 minutes, the outcome will be decided by penalties. After the match, there will be the presentation of WW1 statues by Ian MacDougall and Calum Matheson.
