Portree Primary School Win 2014 Tulloch Primary Schools Trophy | |
23 June 2014 Portree Primary School added the Tulloch Primary Schools Trophy to an already impressive trophy haul this season when they beat Kyles Athletic 2-1 at the Bught Park (outside pitch) on Saturday 21 June 2014. The clash took place ahead of the ahead of the 2014 RBS MacTavish Cup Final between Glenurquhart and Lovat. The current crop of Portree youngsters is coached by David Taylor and Willie MacDonald and they named the same squad which beat Kyles Athletic 5-0 in last weekend’s MacKay Cup Final. However that meeting was much more even than the scoreline suggests and this 1pm throw up was always going to be a much closer affair. Kyles went on the attack from the throw up and they pressured the Portree goal for the opening 15 minutes of the final. However, despite their best efforts, Kyles were unable to find the target and the Portree defence stood firm to hold them at bay. In a sudden change of fortunes, with what was their first foray towards the Kyles goal, Portree took the lead through Taylor Matheson – just as they had done in the previous Saturday’s encounter. Niall MacPhee doubled Portree’s advantage from a well-worked series of passes just 4 minutes later and they took that advantage into the break. Portree pressed the Kyles defence from the start of the second half but they were unable to add to their tally. Kyles came back into the game but Portree keeper Murphy Henderson pulled off a string of impressive saves to keep his side in front. The Kyles’ breakthrough eventually came following a positional switch when forward Archie Wyatt took a bad knock and swapped jerseys with goalkeeper Jack Whyte. Whyte immediately made his presence felt and the Portree defenders struggled to contain him. With just 10 minutes remaining, Whyte fired in a powerful shot from a tight angle to finally put Kyles on the score sheet and make it 2-1. This lifted the Kyles team and they battled hard in the game’s dying minutes but with Henderson in the Portree goal on top form, they were unable to gain the crucial equaliser which would have taken them into extra time. The Tulloch Primary Schools Trophy and medals were presented at the main stand by Camanachd association President Archie Robertson.
