Portree Primary School Retain MacKay Cup | |
15 June 2014 Portree Primary School retained the MacKay Cup with a 5-0 win over Kyles Athletic in the final at the Dell on Saturday 14 June 2014. The MacKay Cup is a national cup competition for Primary Schools. It was first played for 1949 when it was an open completion and it has been contested every year since. This year for the first time a new format was trialled when North and South qualifying competitions were held over one day at Strachur and Fort William on Tuesday 10 June 2014. Portree qualified from the North with Kyles Athletic winning in the South to set up a repeat of last year’s final. Portree first won the MacKay Cup in 1974 under the guidance of Skye Camanachd stalwart DR MacDonald. They did not record their second win until 2005 but they have made regular appearances in the final ever since. Both teams were piped onto the park for this noon throw up by John MacKintosh. Each side made a good start to the final and Portree took the lead on 19 minutes thanks to a goal from Taylor Matheson. It had been a close first quarter to the match but Portree started pulling away and further strikes from Abby MacLean on 22 minutes and her sister Holly MacLean a couple of minutes later to make it 3-0 at the break. The girls’ Dad Caley MacLean was not only a member of the Portree Primary School team which won the MacKay Cup in 1974 but was also Skye Camanachd’s Camanachd Cup winning captain in 1990. Kyles had their chances in the match but Portree keeper Murphy Henderson made a number of good saves. Daniel MacDonald added a fourth and Gilleasbuig MacVicar rounded off the scoring just 5 minutes from time when he made it 5-0. Portree captain Ross Gordon was presented with the MacKay Cup by Kingussie stalwart Iain Ross who was able to show both teams his MacKay Cup winners’ medal from the inaugural final back in 1949. Portree’s Ross Gordon also deservedly received the Anne Cameron Memorial Quaich as man of the match following a dominating performance throughout the game. The current crop of Portree players are coached by David Taylor and Willie MacDonald.
