Portree High School Lift 2013 MacBean Cup | |
06 June 2013 Portree High School lifted the MacBean Cup following an entertaining day’s shinty at the Bught Park, Inverness. The matches were played for 10 minutes each way and in their first match, Portree, who were coached by, John MacLeod and Ruaraidh MacVicar, beat Glenurquhart 1-0 thanks to a John Gillies strike. In their second game, Portree beat Dingwall 8-0 with Ruaraidh MacLeod scoring four times, John Gillies bagged a double and Stuart Taylor and Anna MacDonald got the others. Next up was a clash with Kingussie and once again John Gillies made the difference, as he scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win. The victory left Portree and Lochaber level on six points each and therefore set up a winner takes all in final game. The game between Portree and Lochaber was a close run affair. Ruaraidh MacLeod gave Portree the lead only for Lochaber to equalise a minute from full time. A 4 minute extra-time period produced no more goals so a penalty shoot-out ensued. Ruaraidh MacLeod missed from the spot for Portree and Lochaber scored to go 1-0 in front. Stuart Taylor was next up for Portree and he scored whilst Lochaber missed to level the shoot-out at 1-1. John Gillies then stepped up to score Portree’s final penalty which meant Lochaber had to score with their final penalty. However Skye keeper Jack Henderson saved their last effort to leave Portree 2-1 winners in the shoot-out. Portree captain John Gillies was presented with the MacBean Cup by Schools Camanachd Association secretary, Linda Bell. To round off a great day for Portree High School, John Gillies was deservedly named player of the tournament.
