Portree High School were League A winners in the 2016 Girls League Finals Day at Lochaber High School on Friday 10 June 2016.
Nine High School teams – Ardnamurchan A, Ardnamurchan B, Kingussie, Kinlochleven / Fort Augustus, Lochaber A, Lochaber B, Oban, Plockton and Portree - took part in the 9-a-side tournament.
The teams were split into two sections with Ardnamurchan A, Kingussie, Lochaber A and Portree in League A and Plockton, Lochaber B, Ardnamurchan B, Kinlochleven / Fort Augustus and Oban in the Development League.
League A
Ardnamurchan A, Kingussie, Lochaber A and Portree played a round-robin League A group stage with Portree easing through to the final with a 100% record. They were joined by second placed Lochaber A.
Portree beat hosts Lochaber A in the final to lift the trophy. The game was tied at a goal apiece before Abby MacLean turned the match Portree’s way in the second half, either scoring or setting up four Portree goals in the final 5 minutes of the game to seal a 5-1 win.
Development League
Plockton, Lochaber B, Ardnamurchan B, Kinlochleven / Fort Augustus and Oban also each played each other once during the Development League group stages with some very close games.
Lochaber A and Plockton topped the group on the same points so they progressed to the final. There was little to separate these teams throughout the day and the final proved to be no exception. It finished 2-2 after the regulation time so 5 minutes extra time took place with the golden goal rule in play. Lochaber had the best of the early possession and came close to scoring on two occasions. However the Plockton defence held firm and they conjured up a nice passage of play to score and make it 3-2 to give Plockton victory.
Lochaber Ladies’ Hanna Dougan refereed throughout the day and also presented the medals to all four finalists.
