22 April 2019 The Newtonmore second team were too strong for the Skye Camanachd second team; winning 5-0 in their Mowi North Division 1 match at the Eilan on Saturday 20 April 2019. Newtonmore manager Orsten Gardner agreed to Skye’s request for a noon throw up so the Islanders could head for Blairbeg afterwards to watch the first team game against Glenurquhart in the cottages.com MacTavish Cup quarter-finals. Skye second team co-managers David MacInnes and Daniel Morrison had a trio of injuries to contend with as Iain Murray, captain Sam MacPhee and Calum Robertson were all ruled out although the latter was named as a sun as his finger doesn’t appear to be broken. Ian MacPherson and veteran Keith MacKenzie were added to the squad with MacKenzie starting in attack. Andrew Banks was a late call-off and David Grant was a late addition to the squad. Connor Jones gave ‘More the lead on 9 minutes when he peeled away from his marker at a corner before firing into the top right corner of the net. Craig MacLeod punished slackness in the Skye backline to add a second on 16 minutes. Duncan Gorman scored on 25 minutes so the hosts took a 3-0 cushion into the interval. ‘More were good up front, moving the ball around well, and Ritchie Irvine added a double on 50 and 64 minutes, one a rebound after Skye keeper Murphy Henderson had saved a penalty, to make the final score 5-0. Connor Jones was very good for the home side, dominating the centre of the park. Skye missed Iain Murray and a fully fit Calum Robertson at the back and whilst the players put in plenty of effort, Newtonmore showed they are a good team.
