03 September 2013 Skye Camanachd went down 5-0 to Marine Harvest North Division 2 leaders Newtonmore in their noon throw up at the Eilan on Saturday 31 August 2013. Skye Camanachd second team manager Murdo Morrison was unable to make the trip so David Grant again looked after the side. David MacInnes was missing as he served the second game of a two match suspension following his red card against Glengarry. Andrew Banks was free from suspension after serving a one match ban for a points accumulation and he started at full back. Work commitments ruled out full forward Angie MacDonald whilst Magnus Burd and Paul MacKinnon were also missing. Allan MacKinnon was included as was Neil MacVicar to give him valuable game time following his call up this week to the Scotland U21 training squad. The lack of a recognised keeper meant that David Grant started in goal League leaders Newtonmore were still without the injured Neil Stewart and keeper JD MacLeod has missed recent games through injury. Second team regular David Fraser was called up to the first team squad. Calum Stewart provided a real goal threat for ‘More after scoring four times against Kinlochshiel the previous weekend. Newtonmore’s U17 forward Sam Richardson fired his side into a 23 minute lead from around the penalty spot after David Grant had saved from Calum Stewart. Mark MacDonald added a second 5 minutes later with a good shot from the right which bulleted over David Grant’s shoulder. A quick-fire Calum Stewart double with great strikes on 40 and 43 minutes- one of which swerved in the air as it flew into the net- left Newtonmore four goals to the good and in control at the interval. Skye switched things around from the start of the second half with Neil MacVicar coming back to full back. Thomas Wilson came on at wing centre with Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod pushing into attack and Andrew Banks being withdrawn. John MacKenzie replaced Ally “Burgers” MacLeod in the forward line on 57 minutes. Calum Stewart completed his hat-trick 15 minutes from time with another fine shot to round off a comfortable 5-0 win for a Newtonmore side which were stronger and fitter all over the park. Skye offered little up front to trouble the home defence which was well marshalled by full back Scott Campbell. A win at Glengarry next weekend will guarantee the league trophy remains at the Eilan for another season. Next up for Skye is a derby meeting with Kinlochshiel in Portree where they will be looking for an improved performance.
