Lochaber Retain Ferguson Transport U17 North Area Trophy | |
03 September 2013 Lochaber U17 retained the annual Ferguson Transport U17 North Area Inter District trophy at Spean Bridge on Sunday 1 September 2013. The weather could not have been more different to the glorious sunshine of seven days previous at the equivalent U14 matches as wind and occasional showers meant that the spectator’s deck chairs were replaced by jackets and scarves.
Semi Final - Inverness U17 5 Skye & Wester Ross 0 The draw paired Inverness with Skye & Wester Ross in the first semi final at noon. Inverness got off to the best possible start when Callum Morrison fired them in to a second minute lead from a well worked free-hit. The Inverness forward line continued to look sharp and moved the ball around well and two more goals followed before half time from Blair Morrison and Jack Hosie. Skye & Wester Ross came more in to the game in the second half without really threatening to score and Inverness snatched another two goals from Rory Gallagher and Liam Symonds before the final whistle.
Semi Final - Badenoch & Strathspey 1 Lochaber 3 The second semi final between Badenoch & Strathspey and Lochaber was fairly even for the first 15 minutes or so until Lewis Morrison put Lochaber in front. After this Lochaber began to take more control of the game and Morrison went on to complete his hat trick with Badenoch’s only counter coming from Neil Hope.
Third / Fourth – Badenoch & Strathspey 2 Skye & Wester Ross 1 After a short break Badenoch & Strathspey lined up for the third / fourth place play off against Skye & Wester Ross. Badenoch took the lead when Savio Genini flicked the ball home after a good run and the score was doubled when Kinlochbervie’s Iain Allison blasted home from distance before half time. Kenny Cushnie pulled a goal back for Skye & Wester Ross in the second half but they could not draw level before full time.
Final – Inverness 0 Lochaber 4 The final was expected to be a close affair after the semi final display from Inverness but Lochaber didn’t allow them to get in to the game and their impressive forward line was starved of the ball. Jordan MacPhee rattled in a first half hat-trick to give Inverness an uphill task and when Stuart Matheson added a fourth mid-way through the second half, there was no way back for Inverness.
Colin Mackinnon from Ferguson Transport presented the Ferguson Transport U17 Shield to Lochaber captain Arran MacPhee and medals to all the finalists. All four matches were played in a very good competitive manner and the coaches had an almost impossible task to pick the 16 player North Area squad to play the South on 29 September at Mossfield, Oban. All players selected will be informed this week. Iain Smith and Martin Bell have been appointed North Area U17 coaches. Highland Shinty Development Officer Russell Jones thanked District coaches: Jimmy Gow and Mike Ritchie (Badenoch), Davie MacVicar and Chris Nixon (Skye & Wester Ross), Iain Smith (Lochaber) and Martin Bell (Inverness) for all their work. Thanks were also given to referee Deek Cameron, Lochaber Camanachd Club, and tournament sponsors Ferguson Transport (Spean Bridge). The North District squads were:
