Kinlochshiel U14 2 Skye Camanachd A U14 5 - UPDATED! | |
24 May 2013 Skye Camanachd A U14 came from a goal down to beat Kinlochshiel U14 5-2 in their Local League match at Kirkton on Friday 24 May 2013. Skye Camanachd youth coaches John MacLeod, John Angus Gillies, David Pringle and David Taylor were all in attendance and they welcomed Angus MacDonald back into to the Skye squad after he missed the MacMaster Cup win over Glenurquhart U14 in the team’s last outing. Emma Gordon joined the squad in place of John MacInnes. Kinlochshiel U14 coach Ross MacDiarmid was able to pick a stronger side for this 6.30pm throw up than the one which lost heavily in Portree in the corresponding fixture earlier in the season. Skye started brightly, shooting up the slope, and they went close to taking the lead in the opening minute. Seconds later, a well worked corner from John Gillies and James Pringle caught the ‘Shiel defence cold, but Gillies’ shot went past the post. A 12 yard Stewart Taylor shot went wide of target on 4 minutes. The home side responded well and on 5 minutes, Skye keeper Jack Henderson made two saves with his feet in quick succession. A low 15 yard drive from Conor Ross went narrowly wide on 13 minutes. The Skye defence then had to deal with a period of pressure and it was no surprise when ‘Shiel took a deserved lead after 18 minutes when Duncan Matheson took advantage of some disarray in Skye defence to score. A much improved ‘Shiel continued to press after the goal. However Skye levelled on 27 minutes thanks to a great individual effort from Conor Ross when he ran through the ‘Shiel defence before finishing well to make it 1-1. Skye keeper Jack Henderson made a great save on 28 minutes, pushing the ball onto the post with his stick. Henderson saved again 3 minutes later and the sides went into the half time break all square. Skye were hitting down the slope in the second half and they went in front for the first time within two minutes of the restart when Conor Ross netted for the second time to make it 2-1. Conor Ross was causing the ‘Shiel defence all sorts of problems and he completed his hat-trick on 41 minutes when he fired home from 10 yards to give Skye a 3-1 lead. ‘Shiel fought back and Lewis MacVicar reduced the deficit to make it 3-2 on 55 minutes with the Skye defence punished for failing to clear their lines. Skye made some tactical changes with Conor Ross going to wing centre, John Gillies moving to buckshee back, Ruaraidh MacLeod to full forward and Marcus Ross to buckshee forward. The switches paid off on 61 minutes when Marcus Ross finished off from edge of the D when he got on the end of a Ruaraidh MacLeod cut back to make it 4-2. Again ‘Shiel pressed in this entertaining tussle and Jack Henderson in the visiting goal produced the save of the match on 65 minutes, getting his stick to a Fergus Dobson rocket just below the crossbar. Marcus Ross sealed the win when he completed the scoring with a neat finish from 15 yards on 69 minutes. Skye did enough to secure victory against a much improved ‘Shiel team. Best for the Islanders were Angus MacDonald at wing centre, Conor Ross in the forward line and James Pringie who continued his fine form in the centre line with a workman-like performance. The win confirms Skye as Local League winners and they will go forward to U14 North Division 1 after the summer.
