Kinlochshiel U14 1 Skye Camanachd B U14 3 | |
10 May 2016 Skye Camanachd B U14 recorded a good 3-1 win over Kinlochshiel U14 in their rearranged Local League meeting at the Sorley MacLean pitch at Plockton High School on Wednesday 4 May 2016. Skye Youth Coach Willie MacDonald included Liam MacPhee for his first game since the primary school Tulloch Cup Final in 2013. Christina MacDonald also started despite being unwell and off school for the previous five days. Kinlochshiel’s Finlay MacRae was moved from buckshee back, where he played against Skye A, to buckshee forward. This 6pm throw up was the first match of the season for the Skye B squad whilst ‘Shiel lost 4-2 to the Skye A side at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree in the opening round of fixtures. It had been a dirty day on Skye, and even in Kyle, but it had been surprisingly dry in Plockton for most of the afternoon where John Matheson guaranteed the game would go ahead after it was postponed the previous Friday at Kirkton. The pitch was bumpy and spongy with the grass strangely long in places and in desperate need of a roll. Never-the-less, it was the same for both teams. Skye made the stronger start with full centre Dan MacDonald making some solid tackles and playing some dangerous passes to wing forwards Holly MacLean and Katherine Dibble who saw plenty of the ball. Skye took the lead after 6 minutes. A Dan MacDonald free-hit from the half-way line went over ‘Shiel full back Duncan MacMillan and Niall MacPhee took just one touch to get the ball out of his feet and he lashed a right-handed shot into the roof of the net from around the penalty spot, giving the keeper no chance. Skye doubled their lead a couple of minutes later when some good play from Holly MacLean on the Skye right culminated in a ball across the D where Katherine Dibble struck it first-time, low into the left-hand corner of the net. It was a fine finish which made it 2-0. Skye keeper Murphy Henderson was first called into action on 19 minutes when he palmed away a shot from Finlay MacRae. ‘Shiel continued to press and, a minute later, home full centre Calum Reid fired the ball just past the top left-hand corner of Murphy Henderson’s net from 20 yards out. Skye made a change on 25 minutes when Abby MacLean came on for Christina MacDonald. Skye made it 3-0 a minute later when some tenacious work from Gilleasbuig MacVicar on the left wing saw him pick out the energetic Holly MacLean who cut in from the right wing and ran across her marker before crashing the ball low into the net to restore her team’s two-goal advantage. Skye made a second substitution at half-time when Liam MacQueen came on for Gilleasbuig MacVicar. The opening period of the second half turned into a midfield battle and, as Skye made some positional changes, Shiel came more into the game. Skye keeper Murphy Henderson saved smartly with his hand on 55 minutes from Corran Jack. A lovely move down the Skye right on the hour mark saw Holly MacLean play a one-two with Portree Primary School player Liam MacQueen. MacLean chipped the ball into the danger-area and MacQueen plucked the ball out of the air and lashed a shot towards the top-left corner of the net but ‘Shiel keeper Finn MacPherson pulled off a fabulous save to deny the youngster a debut goal. Kinlochshiel pushed Duncan Matheson forward from buckshee back to full centre for the final 10 minutes of the game and Murphy Henderson had to come off his line on more than one occasion with Matheson always involved in the build-up play. Matheson then saw a rocket-shot from 15 yards saved well by Murphy Henderson with his caman above his head. ‘Shiel eventually got past the more experienced Skye keeper on 69 minutes with the help of a deflected effort. Finlay MacRae hit a decent goal-bound shot and Henderson had the ball covered until Ciaran Kellett raised his caman and the ball took a wicked deflection, wrong-footing the helpless Skye keeper. The final whistle went a minute later, giving Skye B a 3-1 win. ‘Shiel had a better second half and Duncan Matheson was again their main man. Skye B exceeded all expectations with an encouraging team display. The defence was solid with the attackers causing their opponents lots of problems with their movement. It was good to see goalie Henderson having to make a variation of saves. Skye Youth Coach Willie MacDonald was especially happy with the return to competitive shinty of Liam MacPhee and he had an excellent game.
