The early team news is beginning to emerge ahead of the Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final between Oban Camanachd and Kyles Athletic which takes place at the Taynuilt Sports Field on Saturday 27 June 2015.
Both teams go into the final on the back of defeats. Oban Camanachd lost 2-0 to Lovat last weekend in their Marine Harvest National Division match at Balgate. Kyles Athletic were defeated 3-1 by Inveraray in their Artemis Macaulay Cup quarter-final tie at the Winterton.
Scott McKillop has slotted in well in the Oban Camanachd defence since joining the club from Glenorchy at the start of this season. Another key defender, Scott MacMillan, has arranged time-off from his work to play. Daniel Cameron has dictated play in the Oban Camanachd midfield whilst Connor Howe is looking the part in attack alongside the likes of the more experienced Andrew MacCuish who captains the team.
Kyles Athletic played Thomas Whyte in defence against Inveraray last weekend although Cameron Keith has been fulfilling that role since Zac Coley left to work abroad and Keith should return for the final where he will be joined in the rear-guard by captain Callum Miller. David Zavaroni will supply plenty ball from midfield for the Kyles attack. Dunkie Kerr has been used in a more offensive role and Oban Camanachd will know that they will need to pay particular attention to forwards Roddy MacDonald and Grant Irvine.
Oban Camanachd and Kyles Athletic have had contrasting recent fortunes in the Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup.
Kyles are current holders; having beaten Inveraray 6-2 in last year’s final with captain Thomas Whyte grabbing a hat-trick. They also lifted the trophy a year earlier. This time it was a much closer affair as they edged out Inveraray on penalties with Donald Irvine’s sudden death spot-hit taking the trophy to Tighnabruaich.
Oban Camanachd haven’t lifted the Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup since 2005 and before that in 1997 when they beat Kyles Athletic in the final. However they had a purple-patch in the competition, winning it eight consecutive times between 1987 and 1994.
The sides last met in the final in 2011 with Kyles Athletic winning that encounter.
There will be a minutes silence ahead of throw up as a mark of respect for legendary shinty figure Jack Asher who passed away on Tuesday 23 June 2015.
