Late Goals Seal Skye Win - Glenurquhart 0 Skye Camanachd 3 | |
17 March 2014 Skye Camanachd made it two wins on the trot with a 3-0 victory over the Glenurquhart second team in their Marine Harvest North Division 1 match at Blairbeg on Saturday 15 March 2014. MacLeod was without the services of keeper Jamie Gannon, Chris Rose and Iain Murray. Aonghas MacDonald continued as stand-in keeper whilst Kenny MacLeod, who had recovered from a broken finger, and John MacKenzie joined the squad which beat the Beauly second team on the opening day of the shinty season. Both started on the bench alongside Ally “Spod” MacLeod. The throw uptime was brought forward to 1pm which allowed the Orion Group Premiership match between Glenurquhart and Kyles Athletic to be reversed as Tighnabruaich was unplayable. The meeting between Glen and Kyles had a 3.15pm throw up. Even although Glenurquhart had both teams at home, they resisted the temptation to use any of their recognised first team players for the meeting with Skye. Skye started well and a Danny Morrison shot was deflected for a corner on 4 minutes. The Islanders took the lead a minute later when Danny Morrison created some space for himself and from 25 yards out; he hit a rocket shot into roof of the net to make it 1-0. Skye continued to press Glen defence, with Danny Morrison looking particularly dangerous and he shot over the top on 9 minutes. A Jordan Murchison shot from an acute angle, 15 yards from goal, hit the side-netting on 16 minutes. Couple of minutes later, Glen keeper David MacFadyen saved well from Kenny Campbell. Danny Morrison shot over on 20 minutes and the visitors suffered a blow a minute later when Will Cowie had to leave the field with a hamstring problem and he was replaced by Kenny MacLeod A Shockie MacLennan shot from distance on 28 minutes rose over the top of the Glen goal. Skye continues to press and further efforts from Shockie MacLennan on 37 minutes and Kenny Campbell a minute later went narrowly wide. Skye had the chance to double their advantage 3 minutes before the break when referee David Stafford pointed to the penalty spot when Glen keeper David MacFadyen appeared to fall on the ball inside the area. Jordan Murchison’s spot-hit was sweetly struck but MacFadyen got his body in the way to make the save. Jordan Murchison shot just past the post on the stroke of half time. Skye were enjoying plenty of pressure but they lacked composure in front of goal with Glenurquhart, as expected, making it difficult for the visitors. The second half started in a similar fashion and Skye had the ball in the Glen net on 50 minutes but it was ruled out when goal judge Billy Witherspoon flagged for offside. Glen’s keeper Davis MacFadyen saved well with his stick from great shot from Danny Morrison on 58 minutes. Skye manager John MacLeod shuffled his pack a minute later with Ally "Spod" MacLeod replacing Jordan Murchison and Shockie MacLennan moving from full-centre to full forward. Gilleasbuig MacDonald went to full centre with Ally MacDonald going to wing centre and MacLeod slotting in at wing back. Glenurquhart had plenty of talent and indeed goal threat in in attack but on the occasions that Billy Urquhart, Cairn Urquhart, Jack Hosie and Raymond Robertson had possession, they were well contained by the Skye back line. Skye continued to press Glen defence and Shockie MacLennan shot wide from 12 yards. Another Skye reshuffle saw John MacKenzie replacing the injured David Grant on the hour mark. The Glen defence continued to frustrate the Skye forwards, with Donald Fraser particularly effective. There were a spate of fouls on 77 minutes before some great lead up play from Danny Morrison fed the ball to Shockie MacLennan who made no mistake as he fired home from about the penalty spot to make it 2-0. Skye substitute Kenny MacLeod rounded off the scoring with a fine effort from 20 yards on 85 minutes. Fellow substitute John MacKenzie shot just wide a couple of minutes into injury time. Glenurquhart were well served by Donald Fraser and Bradley Dickson in defence as well as keeper David MacFadyen. Best for Skye were Steven Morrison, Ally MacDonald and Neil MacVicar who were solid in defence. Gilleasbuig MacDonald worked away in the centre line whilst Shockie MacLennan again played well when moved into the forward line. Kenny MacLeod caused problems for Glenurquhart defence following his early introduction.
