12 March 2018 The Skye Camanachd second team lost 1-0 in their Marine Harvest North Division 1 match against Glengarry at Craigard on Saturday 10 March 2018. Glengarry were runaway Marine Harvest South Division 2 winners last season and their only pre-season match was a heavy defeat to Marine Harvest National Division side Oban Celtic. Skye manager Kenny MacLeod included Steven Morrison who makes his comeback at full forward after missing almost all of the 2017 shinty season through injury. There was a minute’s silence ahead of this 2.30pm throw up as this was Skye’s first match since the passing of their Vice-Presidents Flora MacLean and Tommy MacKenzie. The hosts played with the wind in the first and Nick Dalgety gave them the lead after 10 minutes. ‘Garry were enjoying most of the first half pressure so Skye pulled Steven Morrison, who wasn’t seeing much of the ball at full forward, back to full back midway through the half to help keep things tight at the back. The visitors made changes at the break with David MacInnes coming on for Calum Robertson, who finished the half at wing centre, and Angie MacDonald taking over from Daniel Morrison in attack. Skye went on to have their best spell in the game. Ross Gordon and Angie MacDonald had chances but the Islanders couldn’t find an equalising goal. Glengarry defended well and Skye, in the main, were forced into shooting from distance. Skye, whose pre-season programme was wiped out by the wintery weather, had keeper Ryan Morrison to thank for a couple of good stops. ‘Garry twice had the ball in the net but both efforts were ruled out for earlier infringements. With 5 minutes remaining, ‘Garry looked sure to double their lead but Skye some-how managed to clear the ball off the line. This was a scrappy game and both teams looked rusty; more so Skye who hadn’t played since August 2017 and Glengarry deserved the win. Glengarry’s Steven Cameron turned in a man of the match performance in midfield. Ally “Spod” MacLeod put was fantastic throughout the whole game for Skye whilst Jamie Gillies, who missed a chunk of last term through injury, grew into the match. James Morrison also played well whilst Ian MacPherson worked tirelessly on the wing; running himself into the ground.
