23 March 2016 Skye Camanachd Ladies recorded a first-ever win over Glasgow Mid Argyll Ladies in their Marine Harvest National Division 1 meeting at Yoker on Sunday 20 March 2016. Skye Camanachd Ladies Head Coach Robbie Gordon added Nicola MacSween and Helen Lamond to the squad which beat Aberdour in their opening league fixture. However sisters Abby MacLean and Holly MacLean were missing for what was always going to be a difficult fixture against the current league champions and Valerie Cup holders. Throw up was at 2pm. The game started at a furious pace and both teams looked to be on form and up for the contest. Skye started to take control of the game around 15 minutes in with their centre line of Emma Gordon, Ilana Paterson and Rihanna Kirk demonstrating what a strong unit they have become. This provided possession for Skye forwards Lorna MacRae, Jenna Beaton and Catlin MacLean and they pushed forward on the opposition goals. And this pressure paid off on 21 minutes when Skye broke the deadlock. There was some good play from Ilana Paterson on the wing and she crossed to Caitlin MacLean who unleashed a shot on target. The GMA keeper managed to push the ball out but only as far as Jenna Beaton whose shot was again saved by the keeper. However it was third time lucky and Caitlin MacLean followed up to push the rebound into the back of the net to make it 1-0. Skye had their tails up and they continued to push for a second goal. Shots from Beaton, MacRae and MacLean rained in on goal and the GMA keeper was kept very busy for the bulk of the half. Towards the end of the half, GMA started to fight back but the Skye defence of Catriona Gibb, Nicola MacSween and Christina MacDonald were steadfast and seemed impenetrable to the GMA forwards. However GMA came close to getting a leveller with a couple of first half minutes remaining but keeper Sarah Jane Ferguson made a tremendous stop with an out-stretched foot under some pressure from the GMA forwards. The second half started as the first ended with some top quality shinty from both sides. It was end-to-end shinty but Skye seemed to be on top of large chunks of the game and they continued to bring the best out of the GMA keeper who was on top form her club. GMA made some changes with 10 minutes remaining and they started to push further into the Skye half in search of an equaliser but with the visiting defence was so well organised that Skye keeper Ferguson was rarely troubled. The referee’s final whistle signalled an historic first win for the Skye camp against the Glasgow side. After the match, Skye Camanachd Ladies Head Coach Robbie Gordon said, “The victory means we have recorded two wins from our two matches which is a great start to the season. The ladies are on the right track but there’s still work to be done in preparation for the games ahead.” Next up for Skye is another difficult encounter, against Badenoch at the Dell on Sunday 3 April 2016.
