Glasgow Celtic Society Statement | |
06 June 2013 The Glasgow Celtic Society has issued a statement following the news that the AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final between Inveraray and Kyles Athletic will not be broadcast on live television. The statement from Glasgow Celtic Society secretary Iain Cameron reads, “I’m very disappointed to announce that the Society has been informed by the Camanachd Association that the AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final between Kyles Athletic and Inveraray, to be played at Strachurmore Sports Centre on Saturday 29 June 2013, will not be televised. “This is the outcome of the Society indicating to the Camanachd Association on 26 October 2012 that they wished to discuss the fact that the Camanachd Association retained the broadcast fee for previously televised Celtic Cup finals. The communication explained that the Society wanted to be better able to put more money into the promotion and presentation of Celtic Cup finals; to be in a position to give participating clubs a share of gate monies, to be able also to put more money into developing shinty in the Central Belt, and the additional income from the broadcast fee would help fund these ambitions. “Having not had a reply, on 7 April 2013, the Glasgow Celtic Society advised the Camanachd Association that, “in the current circumstances of an apparent refusal by the Camanachd Association to even enter discussions with the Glasgow Celtic Society about payment of a broadcast fee, the Society will not grant permission for the final of the Celtic Cup to be televised”. “A reply was received the next day which said that the Camanachd Association Board had decided in late November 2012 not to create a precedent by distributing broadcast income, but offered as an alternative to assist the Society to access public funds to meet our needs. The Society responded that the suggested alternative was unacceptable and the television embargo would remain until the Camanachd Association changed its stance. “No further communication on the subject took place between the parties until 24 May 2013 when the Camanachd Association’s Director of Communications made clear to the Society that the Camanachd Association’s position would not change. He was advised that the Society would review its position on 28 May 2013 and the Camanachd Association would be immediately made aware of the decision. “Some 36 hours after Glasgow Celtic Society’s decision to lift its embargo on televising the cup final was known to the Camanachd Association, the Society was informed that a Premier League tie would be televised on 29 June 2013 instead.” |
