Gerry Smith, Portree | |
17 January 2021 It was with great sadness that everyone at Skye Camanachd heard of the sudden but peaceful passing of Gerry Smith, Portree. Gerry was a keen supporter of Skye Camanachd and helped the club’s fund raising efforts by selling Shinty Lotto tickets each week, a huge source of income for the club, whilst refusing to take commission. He was a well-known character on Skye and his working career included working for the General Post Office which later became British Telecom (BT). During his working life and retirement, Gerry’s volunteer efforts included being an Auxiliary-in-Charge with HM Coastguard in Portree and RNLI Portree paid their own tribute following Gerry’s passing. Gerry was also a key member of the North Skye British Legion where he organised the Remembrance Sunday wreaths, including that of Skye Camanachd for what is an .important day for the town He was a member of the Royal Observer Corps which, as stated in the RNLI tribute, manned the Cold War Bunkers from the 1950s to the early 1990s. A Skye bunker can still be seen at the Cattle Pens in Portree. Skye Camanachd sends out their condolences to Gerry’s family and many friends. Funeral arrangements will be within the current national restrictions. |
