First Half double Gives Skye Cup Win - Lochaber 1 Skye Camanachd 2 | |
08 April 2013 First goals from Paul MacKinnon and Angie MacDonald saw the Skye Camanachd second team beat Lochaber 2-1 in their Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup first round tie at Spean Bridge on Saturday 6 April 2013. This noon throw up was a tough tie for Skye against a Lochaber team which is riding high in Marine Harvest North Division 2. Murdo Morrison took charge of the Skye team who were on the road for the road for the third successive Saturday. The Islanders had drawn with Beauly and Glenurquhart in their last two away games and they were without Iain Nicolson who transferred to Lovat during the week. Skye took the lead after 21 minutes when a long David Grant free hit from inside his own half was knocked on by Kenny Campbell into the path of Paul MacKinnon and he swept the ball into the net. Skye were the dominant side and Lochaber tried to change their fortunes by introducing Keith Neville, who had started on the bench because of injury. However it was Skye who doubled their advantage on 39 minutes when a blistering Angie MacDonald drive from a tight angle flew into the Lochaber net. Lochaber came close to pulling a goal back as Skye keeper Jamie Gannon had to stretch to make a fingertip save from a looping ball on goal. Skye had played well in the first half but Lochaber mounted a determined comeback in the second period and only some stout defending from the visitors kept the hosts at bay. Lochaber’s Keith Neville was forced off with what seemed like a hamstring injury. Lochaber eventually pulled a goal back on 84 minutes when a well taken low shot from Duncan MacKinnon, back in the team after injury, nestled in the Skye net following a goalmouth scramble. Skye saw out the remainder of the game however the result mattered little when it was discovered that Skye had played Kenny Campbell who is in the club’s “named ten” and thus ineligible for this competition. It is therefore Lochaber who go through to play Kilmallie in the next round.
