Double North Win Over South In Youth Representative Matches | |
03 October 2016 The North posted two victories over their South counter-parts in the youth representative matches at a sunny An Aird on Sunday 1 October 2016. These games were rescheduled from the previous weekend when the wet weather left An Aird unplayable.
North U14 8 South U14 1 First up was the noon throw up between the North U14 and South U14 for the Fraser MacPhee Trophy. The North maintained their dominance in this clash, recording an 8-1 victory. Fort William’s Victor Smith got the North off to a great start with an early goal, and that was quickly followed by a well-take strike from Skye’s Ross Gordon. The South responded with a neat finish from Inveraray’s Campbell Watt, but Victor Smith, against the run of play, restored the North’s two-goal advantage with another clinical strike from the edge of the box that gave Charlie Ferguson in the South goals no chance. The introduction of Glengarry’s Mungo Blakey gave the North another attacking dimension and it was his determined run that led to Victor Smith claiming his hat-trick with a grounder to make it 4-1 at half time. The second half started with the South on the attack, driven on by the impressive Cally MacNaughton and Daniel Sloss, but it was the North that got the next goal from the stylish and clinical Ross Gordon. Further second half goals from Kingussie’s Kieran MacPherson twice and Skye’s Dan MacDonald made the final score 8-1 in the North’s favour. Niall MacPhee presented the trophy to the winning North captain Finlay Ralston from Glenurquhart who had an excellent game at the heart of the North defence. Special thanks were given to the MacPhee Family for their continued sponsorship of the North v South U14 and U17 representative matches.
North U17 5 South U17 4 (after extra time) The meeting between the North U17 and South U17 was a much closer affair and it took extra-time to separate the teams. The North took an early lead through a goal from Newtonmore’s Iain Robinson. The South responded with an excellent strike from the impressive Daniel MacVicar from Oban Camanachd who managed to create a yard of space from his marker John Gillies from Skye to send a rocket shot into the top corner of the net, giving Lee Dunbar from Beauly in the North goals no chance. With play raging from end to end, it was the North that got the next goal with a low shot into the left corner of the net from Iain Robinson to bring give the North a 2-1 half time lead. The second 40 minutes was played at a frantic pace with play swinging from end to end and chances going a begging at both ends. The South got on level terms with a fine goal from Glasgow Mid Argyll’s Calum McLay. The South then took a deserved lead with Calum McLay on target again. The North responded with a rocket shot from Skye’s James Pringle which was quickly followed by another excellent goal from speedy Beauly forward Robbie Brindle to edge the North in front once again. Not to be outdone, the South battled to the end and were rewarded for all their efforts with a goal from their captain Scott MacDonald from Kyles Athletic to make it 4-4 at full time. There was nothing to separate the teams in the first period of extra time but, 3 minutes into the second period, it was that man Iain Robinson who stuck the decisive blow with rocket shot that flew in to the top corner of the net, leaving keeper Cameron Sutherland from Ballachulish helpless. The goal completed Robinson’s hat-trick and it was a strike fit to win any game. Credit must go to both sets of players for producing such an enthralling encounter. Camanachd Association President Jim Barr presented the cup to the North captain Scott MacKenzie from Lovat. |
