Double Joy For Portree Primary School At 2014 Shinty World Cup | |
04 July 2014 Portree Primary School were double winners at the 2014 Gilmour Sports Shinty World Cup for North Area Primary Schools which took place at the Bught Park, Inverness on Wednesday 25 June 2014.
P7 Shinty Wold Cup Twenty one teams took part across the three competitions played on the stadium pitch on a good dry day. League Sections The thirteen Primary 7 teams were split in to two round-robin leagues with the top four in each league qualifying for the quarter final stage. The remaining teams entered the Championship competition. Portree, Lochaber and Beauly showed up strongly in the Blue League and Lochcarron joined them as qualifiers, just edging out Laggan on goal difference. Laggan and Raigmore went through to the Championship. Portree beat Lochaber 2-0; they defeated Laggan and Lochcarron 3-0. Their biggest win was a 7-0 triumph over Raigmore and they rounded off the league section by beating Beauly 2-0. Inverlochy, Leven, Kingussie and Alvie topped the Red League in that order with Inverness, Kinlochbervie and Glenurquhart joining the Championship knock-out stages. Quarter Finals In the World Cup quarter finals, Inverlochy edged out Lochcarron 1-0, Lochaber beat Kingussie 3-0, Beauly beat Leven 3-0 and Portree faced their tightest match of the day, Beating Alvie 1-0. Semi Finals The first semi-final threw up a classic derby match between Inverlochy and Lochaber and the teams could not be separated during normal time and so the match was decided in a ‘Golden Goal’ extra time period. The contest was settled by an outstanding goal that flew in to the top corner to put Lochaber in the Final. The other semi was more decisive as Portree advanced with a 5-0 win over Beauly. Final The final was great end to end match with Lochaber coming close on a few occasions but Portree completed a fantastic month by running out 2-0 winners to add the Shinty World Cup to the Mackay Cup and Tulloch 12-a-side trophies they have recently won.
P7 Championship Competition Preliminary Round Five teams advanced to the Championship Competition knock-out stages and Glenurquhart squeezed out Raigmore in their preliminary round tie courtesy of a Golden Goal. Semi Finals The first semi-final paired Inverness and Kinlochbervie and after another tight encounter the City side went through to the final with a 1-0 victory. The second semi-final was pitched Glenurquhart against Laggan and the sides could not be separated after normal time or the Golden Goal period. So the match was decided in true World Cup style by a penalty shoot-out which Glenurquhart won. Final The Championship Final was another close affair. Although Glenurquhart raced in to a two goal lead Inverness pegged them back to 2-1 and were pressing for an equaliser but ran out of time and the trophy went to Drumnadrochit.
P5 Super Sixes League Sections The Super Sixes competition saw teams from Kingussie, Portree, Alvie, Inverlochy, Balnain, Newtonmore, Kirkhill and Ballachulish play out a round-robin league. Every fixture was very close and competitive although three teams finished a few points clear of the field, Inverlochy and Portree qualified for the final, finishing level on points and just edging out Kirkhill by a single point. Portree beat Kingussie 1-0 and defeated Alvie by the same score. The Islanders drew 1-1 with Inverlochy before winning 2-0 against Balnain, and edging out Newtonmore 1-0. A goalless draw with Kirkhall followed and a 1-0 win over Ballachulish completed the round-robin stage. Final The final was every bit as close as expected and after a great end to end encounter Portree secured the trophy with a 2-1 victory over Inverlochy.
Trophy Presentations At the trophy presentation, Highland Shinty Development Officer Russell Jones thanked the tournament referees - Kingussie High School pupils Craig Ritchie, James Falconer and Rory MacKeachan - competitions scorer Graham Cormack and all coaches, parents and teachers who took the teams to the tournament. The date of this year’s tournament clashed with several Primary School to Secondary School transition days and every effort will be made to avoid a clash in future years. |
