Donald MacDonald, Strachur | |
21 November 2016 There was great sadness in the shinty world following the passing of Donald MacDonald, Strachur. Donald MacDonald was a member of the great Strachur side which overcame the odds to beat Newtonmore at Mossfield in the 1983 Camanachd Cup semi-finals before two late goals meant they eventually lost out 3-2 to Kyles Athletic in the final at Fort William. Strachur were beaten by Kingussie in the MacAulay Cup Final that same year. “Donut”, as he was affectionately known, always had Strachur Shinty Club at heart and his coaching prowess earned him the South Division 2 Manger of the Year accolade at the 2011 Marine Harvest Shinty Awards. The 61 year old former Forestry Commission supervisor made many friends throughout the shinty community and whilst he was a fearsome opponent on the pitch, he was a true gentleman off it. He sadly lost his battle against illness at far too young an age. |
