Caberfeidh 2 Skye Camanachd 2 | |
30 June 2013 Skye Camanachd picked up a well-earned point with a 2-2 draw against Caberfeidh in their Marine Harvest North Division 1 meeting at Castle Leod on Saturday 29 June 2013. Skye manager Willie MacRae was still without the injured trio of Danny Morrison, Darryl Macintosh and Ally “Spod” MacLeod for this noon throw up. Keeper Michael Nicolson and midfielder Gilleasbuig MacDonald were also absentees. Iain MacLellan and Chris MacLennan were called up from the second team and Aonghas MacDonald took over from Nicolson in goal. Will Cowie and Chris Rose were with the second team for their Strathdearn Cup tie against Newtonmore and Skye travelled with just thirteen players. Fourth place Caberfeidh trailed third place Skye by five points ahead of the game. However they had two games in hand so this match was of great importance with only the top three teams in the league being eligible for a place in the new National second tier, assuming one South club is relegated from the top flight at the end of the season. Brian MacDonald was free of suspension for Stewart MacLennan’s side after he missed last weekend’s 5-1 win over Inverness. An early injury to Jordan Murchison left him limping and with manager Willie MacRae the Islanders only substitute, Murchison moved to full forward for the remainder of the game. Skye took the lead on 34 minutes when Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod knocked down a ball which was floated over the top and it fell nicely for Chris MacLennan who hit it first time into the bottom left hand corner of the net from around the penalty. Skye withstood periods of second half pressure but Caberfeidh found an equalising goal 7 minutes from time when Ally MacLennan shot through a ruck of players to make it 1-1. Skye got themselves back in front with just two minutes remaining. A long ball from Allan MacKinnon from just inside his own half was controlled by Jordan Murchison and he turned to score. However with just seconds remaining, a Lee Nicol shot from a tight angle flew over Skye keeper Aonghas MacDonald’s shoulder into the net to make it 2-2. Skye will be delighted with the point, especially given the team raising difficulties they had ahead of the game. Iain MacLellan showed some really nice touches in attack and he forced some good saves from the home keeper and did his chances of retaining a place in the senior team no harm whatsoever.
