Aberdour Ladies 2 Skye Camanachd Ladies 1 | |
05 May 2014 Skye Camanachd Ladies went down 2-1 to Aberdour Ladies in their Marine Harvest National Division 1 match at Silver Sands on Sunday 27 April 2014. Skye Camanachd Ladies Head Coach Sarah Corrigall was without Lorna MacRae, who was playing football for the Inverness City Ladies team, and the injured Ilana Paterson. Fiona Lamond was also missing. This 10.30am throw up was a first meeting between the two clubs with Skye travelling south on the previous day. Aberdour made a strong start to the game and created several chances in the opening 10 minutes and they had a penalty appeal turned down. However Skye’s defence was prepared for the onslaught and they weathered the early storm very well. Skye keeper Sarah Corrigall made a stunning save to deny Katie Booth the opening goal. Aberdour’s pressure eventually resulted in a goal from Katie Booth as she got on the end of a through ball into the box and made no mistake as she slipped the ball past Skye keeper Sarah Corrigall to make it 1-0. Skye picked themselves up after losing the goal and began to play some nice shinty. Emma Gordon, Isabelle Law and Catriona Gibb had to battle hard to win possession in the centre line in order to provide the forwards with the ball. Skye were unable to get back on levels terms though with Aberdour’s defence refusing to let anything through. Aberdour doubled their advantage when Katie Smith made a wonderful solo run which started in the centre of the pitch. Her eventual shot deflected off Sarah Corrigall and was almost cleared by Caitlin MacLean but the ball crossed the line to give the home side a 2-0 half time lead. Skye made changes at the break and moved Helen Lamond to full centre, Caitlin MacLean to half forward and Catriona Gibb half back. This was in the hope that MacLean could add a bit of power to the forward line. Both teams fought hard in a very even second half and Aberdour came close to extending their lead to from a Katie Smith snap-shot following another darting run through Skye’s defence. Skye never gave and defended like titans up in the second half. The Islanders were rewarded with a goal in the last few minutes of the game when Caitlin MacLean found half a yard from her marker and let fly from 20 yards with the Aberdour keeper not seeing the ball until it was in the back of the net. Skye remain fourth in the table, three points behind third place Aberdour. In other top division matches played at the weekend, league leaders Glasgow Mid Argyll remain top on goal difference, beating Glengarry 5-0 at Craigard whilst second place Badenoch & Strathspey had a 5-3 home win over Lochaber. Skye’s next game will be against Aberdour once again; this time at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 10 May 2014.
