2017 Jack Asher Memorial Tournament | |
03 December 2016 The Jack Asher Memorial Tournament will take place at the Garscube Sports Complex on Saturday 28 January 2017. Jack Asher was a Glasgow University honorary president, former club captain (1958–59), and a renowned shinty player and referee. He received a Blue for his shinty exploits with the University and he took up refereeing when his playing career ended. Despite losing an eye following an air rifle accident at only 12 years old, he went on to become one of the game’s top referees. He was the man in the middle in three Camanachd Cup Finals – in 1972 when Newtonmore beat Oban Celtic 6-3 in Glasgow, two years later when Kyles Athletic overcame Kingussie 4-1 in Oban and 1994, as a 64 year old, when he officiated in the at the final in Inverness when Kyles Athletic defeated Fort William 3-1. He passed away in June 2015 and this tournament is in his honour. |
