2016 Strathdearn Cup Final …………. 2 Days To Go! | |
08 September 2016 The 2016 Strathdearn Cup Final between the Glenurquhart second team and Lochcarron takes place at Castle Leod on Saturday 10 September 2016. The Glenurquhart second team have saved some of their best shinty this season for this tournament.
The Road to the Strathdearn Cup Final Strathdearn Cup – First Round Saturday 14 May 2016 Glengarry 2 Glenurquhart 3 The Glenurquhart colts are through to the next round after they beat Glengarry 3-2 at Craigard. Glenurquhart were without Bradley Sneddon who started a two-game ban following his red card against the Lovat second team the previous weekend. Glenurquhart had James MacPherson in their side and he would make a telling contribution. James MacPherson gave the visitors the lead on the half-hour mark but Stuart Gregory pulled Glengarry level just a minute later. Stuart Gregory got his and ‘Garry’s second on 39 minutes to put the home side 2-1 in front. However two goals in two minutes from James MacPherson completed his hat-trick and gave the Glen side a 3-2 advantage at the break. There were no goals in the second half and the Glen seconds will now travel to Braeview Park to play the Beauly seconds in the next round.
Strathdearn Cup – Second Round Saturday 11 June 2016 Beauly 3 Glenurquhart 4 The Glenurquhart reserves continued their good cup form when they beat the Beauly reserves 4-3 in their 1pm throw up at Braeview Park. The Glen went ahead on 3 minutes when a Finlay Robertson corner bounced and ended up in the back of the net. A Calum Miller goal on 8 minutes had the Glen 2-0 ahead. Beauly’s Marc MacLachlan pulled a goal back on 23 minutes but Glen’s James MacPherson fired the ball home on 39 minutes to make it 3-1. Beauly fought back again and Marc MacLachlan got his second to make it 3-2 a minute before the break. When Marc MacLachlan completed his hat-trick a minute into the second half, the sides were tied at three goals apiece. Daniel MacKintosh put Glenurquhart back in front when he made it 4-3 on 48 minutes and, after the early goals blast, the only surprise was that there was no further scoring. The Glenurquhart reserves will now play either the Fort William or Newtonmore reserves in the Strathdearn Cup quarter-finals which are scheduled for Saturday 16 July 2016.
Strathdearn Cup – Quarter Finals Saturday 23 July 2016 Glenurquhart 6 Fort William 0 The Glenurquhart reserves beat the Fort William reserves 6-0 at Blairbeg. Fort William had Gordie MacKinnon in their squad, coming out of retirement to play. James MacPherson has been in great goal scoring form for the Glen reserves this season and he netted four times. Callum Smith and Cairn Urquhart got the others. The Glenurquhart colts now have a Strathdearn Cup semi-final meeting with the Kingussie colts to look forward to.
Strathdearn Cup – Semi Finals Saturday 13 August 2016 Glenurquhart 2 Kingussie 1 The Glenurquhart second team will play Lochcarron in the Strathdearn Cup Final after they beat the Kingussie second team 2-1 at Blairbeg. Kingussie made a strong start and their forwards saw plenty of the ball during the first 5 minutes of the tie. Glenurquhart came back into it with Stuart Reid at full centre getting to grips with the game. It was first blood to the Glen on 8 minutes when James MacPherson collected a pass from Callum Smith and, from 15 yards out, his low shot went into bottom corner of net to make it 1-0. There was further delight for the home support on 12 minutes when James MacPherson ran some distance when juggling the ball on his caman. MacPherson let the ball drop before almost losing it in a challenge. However he recovered to strike a low shot from same position as his opening goal and the ball ended in same corner of net. Just before half hour mark, Kingussie moved Ronald Ross from buckshee back to full forward where he was well marked by Glen full back Paul MacKintosh. With 5 first half minutes remaining, James MacPherson had the ball in the net once more but, to Glenurquhart’s frustration, referee Willie MacDonald blew for a foul on Rory Fraser. Ronald Ross didn’t appear at the start of second half and looked as if he had been limping during the latter stages of the first half. Kingussie pulled a goal back on 81 minutes after a period of constant pressure. The Kings’ centre line were feeding the forwards and the Glen defence were struggling to keep the visiting forwards away from goal. The ball fell to the alert Roddy Young who sent a strike through a packed defence to make it 2-1. Just 30 seconds later, a fierce back-hand shot from Ronald Ross, who had returned to the field of play, was excellently saved with his hand by Cameron MacLennan. Unlike his earlier spell in attack, Ronald Ross was now finding plenty of space and he sent a number of powerful shots on target, producing some fantastic saves from Cameron MacLennan in the Glen goals. One particular back-hand rocket a minute from time resulted in the best save of all which had the Glen support on their feet cheering their keeper. There was late drama when referee Willie MacDonald awarded Kingussie a penalty after consulting with his goal judge. Prolific scorer Kevin Thain stepped forward but his powerful strike went wide of Cameron MacLennan’s left hand post. His performance during a busy final 15 minutes made Cameron MacLennan a candidate for man of the match although Drew MacLennan at half back was also excellent whilst James MacPherson’s two goals made the difference. The 2016 Strathdearn Cup Final between Lochcarron and the Glenurquhart second team is scheduled for Saturday 10 September 2016.
