2014 Pre-season Friendlies – Saturday 22 February 2014 - UPDATED! | |
23 February 2014 The clubs that managed to beat the weather made their final preparations ahead of next week’s start of the 2014 shinty season, with a final round of pre-season friendlies on Saturday 22 February 2014.
Aberdour 0 Kyles Athletic 2 Aberdour first team met a Kyles Athletic side which included former Bute player Leighton Reid at Silversands. Two first half goals in a three minute spell from Roberto Zavaroni and David Zavaroni gave Kyles a 2-0 victory.
Ballachulish 1 Glenorchy 4 Ballachulish had a double-header against Glenorchy with their first teams playing in a ten-a-side match at the Kinlochleven all-weather pitch. Glenorchy got themselves in front thanks to first half goals from Grant MacPherson and Kieran MacKay. Lorne Brown pulled a goal back for Ballachulish against his former club but a late double from John McNulty gave Glenorchy victory.
Ballachulish 2 Glenorchy 3 The Ballachulish and Glenorchy second teams had a noon meeting at the Kinlochleven all-weather pitch. This match was also ten-a-side and David Malcolm and Ally Banks scored for Balla’ but three goals in reply from Arik MacKechnie, Callum Kirsop and Findlay Ross gave Glenorchy a narrow victory.
Caberfeidh 4 Beauly 3 Caberfeidh came from 3-1 down to beat Beauly 4-3 in their reserve side meeting at Castle Leod. There was a minute’s silence ahead of the 2pm throw up in memory of Malcolm MacLeod who passed away earlier this week. Caberfeidh got off to the best possible start when they scored in the first minute through Stewart Kryzanowski. However Martin Davidson made it 1-1and Sandy Elrick struck twice to see the visitors lead 3-1. Stewart Kryzanowski scored his and Cabers second from a rebound to make it 3-2 and Beauly had keeper Kyle MacDonald to thank for a penalty save which prevented Beauly restoring their two goal cushion. Cabers’ Craig Morrison levelled the match when he scored following a goalmouth scramble to leave the game finely poised at three goals each the interval. The winner came when Colin MacLennan collected the ball in space and netted the only goal of the second half. Beauly keeper Josh Grant prevented the home side going further ahead when he saved a penalty from former team mate Liam Symonds
Col Glen P Kilmory P The match between Col Glen and Kilmory was postponed.
Fort William P Lochaber P The Torlundy Shield match between the Fort William and Lochaber second teams at An Aird was postponed on Friday evening.
Fort William P Lochaber P The Torlundy Cup match scheduled for later in the day between Fort William and Lochaber was also postponed with An Aird failing a pitch inspection.
Kilmory P Lochside Rovers P The match between Kilmory and Lochside Rovers at MacRae Park was postponed.
Kingussie 6 Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Orion Group Premiership side Kingussie ran out convincing 6-0 winners against Glasgow Mid Argyll from National Division 1 at the Dell. Bob MacGregor scored twice with Savio Genini also on target. However Lee Bain was the top marksman as he helped himself to a hat-trick.
Lochbroom P Lewis Camanachd P The Minch Cup clash between Lochbroom and Lewis Camanachd at Inverlael was postponed. Lewis had travel difficulties with the ferry sailings to Ullapool suspended and the pitch also failed a Friday afternoon inspection.
Lochcarron P Kinlochshiel P The lunchtime derby between Lochcarron and Kinlochshiel at Battery Park was postponed. The sides are scheduled to meet in Marine Harvest North Division 2 next weekend.
Lovat 6 Kilmallie 2 Lovat beat Kilmallie 6-2 at Balgate. Greg Matheson and Kevin Bartlett both hit doubles for the home side with Ryan Ferguson and Lewis Tawse getting the others. A Liam MacDonald penalty and a Martin Munro goal counted for the home side.
Newtonmore A P Newtonmore B P Newtonmore went ahead with their Open Day at the Eilan. The day started with an exhibition of memorabilia by Rob Ritchie and David Cheyne. The main event was to be a meeting between Newtonmore A managed by Paul John MacKintosh and Newtonmore B with Cammy MacDonald and Glen Tonkin in charge. Two strong squads were named but unfortunately the game couldn’t go ahead because of water on the Eilan.
Oban Celtic 2 Glengarry 0 Oban Celtic lifted the Robert Wylie Memorial Cup with a 2-0 win over Glengarry in difficult conditions at Mossfield. The Oban side raced into a two goal lead early in the game. Kenny Wotherspoon fired them ahead after 15 minutes and Wotherspoon got his and his side’s second goal on 24 minutes. There was no further scoring so the Marine Harvest South Division side ran out winners against their Marine Harvest North Division 2 rivals.
Strathspey Camanachd 2 Newtonmore 6 A youthful Newtonmore second string made the short journey to play Strathspey Camanachd. This 11.30am throw up marked the opening of Strathspey’s new pitch at Grantown Grammar School. Newtonmore made a blistering start to the game and they scored twice within the first 5 minutes. Craig MacLeod gave them the lead before Darrin Fowler added a second. Craig MacLeod got his second and ‘More’s third when he knocked a rebound into the back of the net. Bob Davies pulled a goal back before the break for Strathspey to make it 3-1. Newtonmore made a number of substitutions at half time. The pattern of play continued the same though and substitute Chris Sellar continued his rehabilitation following injury with his side’s fourth goal. Iain Robinson made it 5-1 after earlier hitting the post. Andy Hay had a fine game for Strathspey and he pulled a goal back before Darrin Fowler got his second goal of the game to make it 6-2.
Oban Camanachd P Kinlochshiel P The game between Oban Camanachd and Kinlochshiel was postponed as Ganavan was deemed unplayable on the Friday.
Strathglass 0 Glenurquhart 6 Pre-match favourites Glenurquhart retained the MacDonald Cup with a 6-0 win over local rivals Strathglass in their 2pm throw up at Cannich. Two divisions currently separate the clubs which made it difficult for Strathglass and James MacPherson put the Glen ahead on 16 minutes before Neale Reid doubled their advantage on 22 minutes. There was no further first half scoring but Lewis MacLennan added a third on 53 minutes. Neale Reid got his second on 73 minutes and Fraser Heath made it 5-0 just 3 minutes later. Ewan Brady added his name to the score sheet a minute from time to round off a 6-0 victory.
Strathglass 1 Glenurquhart 4 The Strathglass and Glenurquhart reserve sides contested the Ally Bhan Cup in a 12 noon clash at Cannich. Raymond Robertson, who scored twice against Boleskine last weekend, put the Glen ahead on 6 minutes. Daniel MacKintosh added a second on 14 minutes. Raymond Robertson got his second on 26 minutes and Glenurquhart took a three goal cushion into the half time break. Lawrence Jones pulled a goal back for Strathglass 5 minutes into the second half but there was to be no comeback and Liam Robertson restored the Glen’s three goal advantage 5 minutes from time to make it 4-1, meaning Glenurquhart retained the Ally Bhan Cup.
Tayforth P Taynuilt P The match between Tayforth and Taynuilt at Musselburgh was postponed.
