2014 Pre-season Friendlies – Saturday 15 February 2014 | |
16 February 2014 With just two weeks to go until the start of the 2014, the pre-season friendlies continued on Saturday 15 February 2014.
Boleskine 0 Glenurquhart 6 Boleskine went down 6-0 to Glenurquhart at Farr. The final outcome was a little harsh on the home side with Raymond Robertson scoring twice against his former club whilst Cairn Urquhart also bagging a brace. Daniel MacKintosh and Jack Hosie got the others.
Caberfeidh 3 Newtonmore 5 Caberfeidh set themselves a tough challenge when they took on Newtonmore in a 2.30pm throw up at Castle Leod but they gave shinty’s top side a few scares before eventually going down 5-3. The visitors had Steven MacDonald and Jamie Robinson back in their squad for the journey west. Craig Morrison and a Blair Morrison double counted for Cabers but two each from Glen MacKintosh and Evan Menzies and a Fraser MacKintosh strike gave Newtonmore victory.
Fort William 4 Inveraray 0 Fort William beat Inveraray 4-0 in their 1pm throw up at An Aird. Gary Innes, who missed a large part of last season through commitments with his band Manran, hit a first half double to put Fort William two goals to the good. Niall MacPhee pushed forward from his full centre berth to make it 3-0 just before the half time whistle. Gary Innes completed his hat-trick in the second half with the home side’s fourth goal to round off a fine win.
Glenurquhart 5 Skye Camanachd 0 Glenurquhart co-managers Dave Menzies and Billy MacLean made a winning return with a 5-0 win over Skye Camanachd in their 1.30pm throw up at Blairbeg. Skye suffered a blow ahead of the game when full back Steven Morrison had to call off because of a muscle injury he picked up in training earlier in the week. Lewis MacLennan gave the Glen an early lead with what was the only goal of the first half. The Islanders capitulated when they lost four goals in an eight minute period early in the second half. James MacPherson, a Neale Reid double, either side of a Lewis MacLennan’s second, this time from the penalty spot, made it 5-0. Skye manager John MacLeod made some changes at the back and his side competed well for the remainder of the game against Orion Group Premiership opposition.
Inverness 1 Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Glasgow Mid Argyll had to battle all the way to beat Inverness 2-1 at the Bught Park. Craig Anderson gave GMA the lead after 33 minutes. Dougie Rankin drew Inverness level but former Lochcarron player Ben Dalgety got the winner for GMA on the hour mark. Inverness player Zander Grant suffered a broken ankle and a cracked rib and will miss the start of the season.
Inverness 0 Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 The Inverness and Glasgow Mid Argyll second strings also had a meeting at the Bught Park outside pitch. The only goal of the game was scored by GMA’s Lewis Miller after 17 minutes.
Kilmallie P Lochaber P The BSW Cup match between Kilmallie and Lochaber was postponed as the pitches at both the Canal Parks and Spean Bridge were deemed unplayable.
Kingussie 4 Beauly 2 Kingussie beat Beauly 4-2 in their 2pm throw up at the Dell. Beauly had the best of the early stages of the game and they created a few chances, However Kingussie settled and Thomas Borthwick gave them the lead 5 minutes before the break. David MacLean equalised a couple of minutes into the second half but Kingussie scored three times as many minutes through Lee Bain, Savio Genini and Thomas Borthwick again to take charge. Indeed the home side could have added to their tally as they hit the frame of the goal four times and Thomas Borthwick missed out on a hat-trick when he failed to convert from the penalty spot. David MacLean reduced the deficit from the penalty spot with the last hit of the game to make it 4-2.
Kinlochshiel Under 25s 2 Kinlochshiel Over 25s 0 The youngsters were the winners at the annual meeting between the Kinlochshiel Under 25s and Over 25s. The match was switched from Kirkton to the school pitch at Plockton High School. The sides rounded the day off with a fund raising Race Night at Inverinate Hall.
Lewis Camanachd P Lochcarron P The noon throw up between Lewis Camanachd and Lochcarron at Inverlael was postponed because of an unplayable pitch.
Lochside Rovers P Fort William P Lochside Rovers and the Fort William second team were thwarted by an unplayable pitch at Ganavan.
Newtonmore 2 Ballachulish 4 Ballachulish beat the Newtonmore second team 4-2 at the Eilan to retain the Bear Tankard. This was a great contest, played in fine spirit and the good sized crowd included a large travelling support. Newtonmore played with the wind at their backs in the first half. They created chances but weren’t able to find a way past Balla’ keeper David MacPhee. And it was the visitors who took a single goal lead into the break thanks to a Scott Henderson goal. Balla’ had the wind advantage in the second period and the half was only minutes old before Lorne Brown shot past Newtonmore keeper Kenny Ross to make it 2-0. Newtonmore fought back strongly though and they were soon level thanks to goals from Chris Sellar and Mark MacDonald. Indeed Newtonmore might have found themselves in front had it not been for a series of fine saves from visiting keeper David MacPhee. They were made to pay when Lorne Brown got his second goal of the afternoon to put Ballachulish back in front. The remainder of the game was a tale of two penalties. First Newtonmore’s John MacKenzie saw his penalty saved by David MacPhee. Referee Laurie Skudos ordered a retake and MacPhee saved once more. At the other end, Balla’ were also awarded a spot-hit which was converted by Grant MacKenzie to make it 4-2 and give Ballachulish victory. Ballachulish captain John MacDonald was presented with the Bear Tankard by Newtonmore stalwart Rab Ritchie.
Oban Camanachd 2 Lovat 0 Oban Camanachd had a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Lovat at Mossfield. The MacTavish Cup holders travelled south with just twelve players. Michael MacKenzie, Craig Mainland, Martin Mainland and keeper Stuart MacDonald were amongst the absentees and James Gallacher played in goal. Fraser Gallacher was back in the Lovat first team and he played well in defence. Oban Camanachd full centre Daniel Cameron dominated the game and he provided plenty of possession for the home forwards. Lovat rarely threatened and goals from Iain MacMillan in the first half and Andrew MacCuish in the second period left them worthy winners.
Strathglass 4 Oban Celtic 1 Strathglass beat Oban Celtic 5-1 at Cannich. Ally MacAdams has taken over the penalty duties after Darren Reid missed from the spot last week. MacAdams converted a penalty later in that same game and he slammed home another penalty on 8 minutes to give his side the lead. Scott Douglas made it 2-0 just a minute into the second half and although Oban Celtic pulled a goal back on 56 minutes through Kenny Wotherspoon, Scott Douglas got his second a minute later to make it 3-1. Robert Geddes rounded off the scoring with a 62 minute strike to give Callum Duff’s side their second pre-season victory.
Strathspey Camanachd 1 Kingussie 6 Strathspey went down 6-1 to the Kingussie second team at Invereshie, Kincraig. Kingussie veteran Kevin Thain led by example with a hat-trick whilst the other goals came from youngsters James Falconer, Jack Anderson and Ruaridh Anderson. Martin Ross countered for Strathspey.
