26 November 2011 Billy MacKinnon has been named as the new Skye Camanachd Chieftain following the club’s Annual General Meeting on Thursday 24 November 2011. He takes over from Flora MacLean whose three year tenure has just ended. Billy MacKinnon has a long and distinguished association with Skye Camanachd. He was a member of the Skye Camanachd team which won the Sutherland Cup for the first time. He scored the opening goal in the Islanders 5-4 win over Newtonmore in the final at the Ferry Park, Beauly on Saturday 1 April 1950. He is a regular at Skye Camanachd games where his nephews Ross and Willie Cowie are still involved and he is also able to watch his grand-nephew Will Cowie’s progress through the Skye ranks. Billy MacKinnon also has a strong family association with Skye Camanachd. His father Angus Mackinnon was a Skye Camanachd goalkeeper in the 1920s whilst his grandfather Billy Ross is of the 1890s Skye team. Billy’s brother Donnie MacKinnon was a fine player for the club and he was Skye Camanachd’s first team manager in the 1970s. Donnie was also a committee member for several years who led the project to produce the book “Skye Camanachd - A Century Remembered”, written by Martin MacDonald, which celebrated the first 100 years of Skye Camanachd. His son-in-law Duncan Martin was also a player and second team manager for the Islanders. Skye Camanachd’s greatest moment came in 1990 when they beat Newtonmore to win the Camanachd Cup and Billy’s son Willie MacKinnon was a member of the successful Skye Camanachd squad. |
