24 September 2011
It was back to league action as Kyles Athletic and Newtonmore battle it out for the Scottish Hydro Premier Division title in a weather affected shinty programme on Saturday 24 September 2011.
Scottish Hydro Premier DivisionOban Camanachd 1 Kyles Athletic 3 League leaders Kyles Athletic knew they had a tricky assignment as they headed for Mossfield to play Oban Camanachd. This was emphasised when Iain MacMillan shot the home side into a 23 minute lead. It took Kyles until the hour mark to level and the goal came from an unfamiliar source as David Zavaroni netted. It looked like Kyles might drop a point until Roddy MacDonald on 84 minutes and Fraser MacDonald a couple of minutes from time gave them a 3-1 win.
Newtonmore 3 Inveraray 0 The other title contenders Newtonmore have enjoyed a week like no other for the last 25 years as they celebrated bringing the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup to the Eilan. However it was back to the serious business of defending their league title as they welcomed Inveraray to the Eilan. The reigning champions showed little sign of a hangover though and Glen MacKintosh put them ahead on the half hour mark. MacKintosh went on to complete his hat-trick with goals on 65 and 80 minutes and he even missed a penalty 5 minutes from time. The reigning champions were solid in defence and their forwards forced visiting keeper Graeme MacPherson into a number of good saves. Newtonmore remain a couple of points behind Kyles Athletic with the sides due to play at Tighnabruaich next week.
