Co-operative MacTavish Cup Final
Kingussie 4 Fort William 2
Kingussie survived a Fort William come-back to secure the first piece of silverware of the shinty season as they won the Co-operative MacTavish Cup with a 4-2 victory over Fort William at the Bught Park, Inverness. Holders Kingussie had defender Lee Bain back in the side after he missed last weekend’s Macaulay Cup win over Lovat. Managers Stevie Borthwick and Russell Jones were also able to call on the services of Ally MacLeod who had missed the last four weeks with a hamstring problem. Fort William’s Niall MacPhee returned from working abroad to start at full centre and there was a place in defence for veteran Adam Robertson. Gordie MacKinnon recovered from a foot knock and manager Peter McIntyre kept faith in striker Daniel Stewart who scored a hat-trick in the 9-0 win over Glenorchy last week. However McIntyre was without the services of defenders Liam MacIntyre and Neil Robertson. Kingussie got off to a great start when Fraser Munro burst forward to score the opening goal within 60 seconds of the throw up. Fort William had the chance to level 5 minutes later when they were awarded a penalty by referee Graham Cameron but Gary Innes’ spot-hit was saved by Kingussie keeper Andrew Borthwick. Kingussie lost Louis Munro with what was later confirmed as a broken collar-bone and his replacement Martin Dallas made it 2-0 on 28 minutes. Fort William fought back though and John MacDonald made it 2-1 with a great strike on 33 minutes. Gary Innes then atoned for his penalty miss when he squared the contest a couple of minutes before the break. Kingussie wing forward Craig Dawson escaped his marker to put Kingussie 3-2 in front on 65 minutes and the final remained finely posed until the ninetieth minute when Ronald Ross, who had been hampered by a hand injury sustained earlier in the game, made it 4-2 with a trade-mark goal. There were bookings for Fort William’s James Clark and Garry Munro and Fraser Munro of Kingussie. Kings’ Fraser Munro was named man of the match and captain Ronald Ross was presented with the MacTavish Cup and the “Munro” silver-mounted caman as his side retained their strangle-hold in this competition.
