Memory Lane – Season 1989 / 90 – Part 19. | |
30 November 2010 North Division 1 Skye Camanachd 2 Newtonmore 0 Skye Camanachd stayed in second place in the league following their 2-0 win over Newtonmore at the King George V Park. Skye welcomed forward John MacRae back into the side following a 5 match suspension. He came into the team in place of the injured Willie Cowie and he lined up against ‘More defender Norman “Brick” MacArthur. . Skye settled quickly and dominated the opening exchanges however they were wasteful in front of goal. Skye took the lead after 20 minutes and the goal had an element of fortune about it. A Willie MacKinnon pass was fortuitously deflected by a ‘More defender into the path of Calum Murchison. However there was no luck about the finish as Murchison took the ball on the turn and blasted it into the corner of Hugh Chisholm’s net. Peter Gordon almost doubled Skye’s advantage a minute later. He held the ball up well before creating the chance to shoot but his effort went wide of target. However Gordon found range soon after and Willie MacKinnon was the provider once again. Some tenacious tackling from MacKinnon won possession on the Skye left and he played in Gordon who sent a scorching 20 yard drive past the helpless Chisholm to make it 2-0. Skye looked to have made it 3-0 moments later when Calum Murchison finished off a good attack. However referee John Henderson infuriated the Skye players by harshly ruling the goal out for offside. John MacRae spurned a chance just before the interval when he shot at Chisholm from close range. The rebound fell to Willie MacKinnon but his effort came back off the junction between post and bar. Skye seemed to lose momentum in the second half and Newtonmore came back into the game. The Skye defence were forced to play their part and home keeper John “Bodach” MacKenzie did well to deal with a long range Neil Ross shot just under his crossbar. Referee John Henderson awarded Skye a penalty after 82 minutes for an offence by ‘More keeper Hugh Chisholm. However Peter Gordon’s spot-hit went wide of target. However Skye saw out the remainder of the game to take the points. This wasn’t one of Skye’s better performances but, crucially, they bagged both points and they trail leaders Kingussie by 5 points but have 2 games in hand. Skye face Kingussie in Portree next in the Macaulay Cup and they will hope to have play-maker Willie Cowie back for this one. |
