The Saturday Shinty Snapshot – 25 September 2010! | |
25 September 2010 Ahead of the weekly Shinty Round Up, the headlines from the shinty matches played on Saturday 25 September 2010 are……….. Scottish Hydro Premier Division Kingussie and Fort William shared the points after a bad tempered Scottish Hydro Premier Division tussle at the Dell. The home side went 2-0 up after just 20 minutes thanks to strikes from Thomas Borthwick and James Hutchison. A Bryan Simpson goal 4 minutes from the break got the Fort back in the game and two goals in 60 seconds from Gordie MacKinnon and Simpson 5 minutes into the second half put the visitors 3-2 ahead. However Thomas Borthwick scored his second goal of the day after 63 minutes to make it 3-3. Referee Ronnie Campbell had a busy day sending off Fort William’s John MacDonald for a challenge on Ricky Grant whilst Ronald Ross, who played the game in defence, was also dismissed for just the second time in his career, 5 minutes from the end for a challenge on Duncan Rodger. There were many interested spectators from Newtonmore watching the game and they now know that if they avoid defeat against Fort William at An Aird next weekend, they will be champions. Oban Camanachd were 4-1 winners over already relegated Glasgow Mid Argyll at Mossfield. Fulton Ross put Mid Argyll ahead but first half doubles from Daniel MacIntyre and Ian MacMillan gave Oban 2 priceless points. Oban must now hope that Bute lose at Inveraray and beat the Islanders in their last game to survive in the top flight. Third place Kyles Athletic took the lead against fifth place Inveraray at Tighnabruaich thanks to a Matthew MacColl goal after 28 minutes. Late strikes from Colin MacColl and Grant Irvine gave Kyles a 3-0 victory. Marine Harvest North Division 1 Kilmallie have one hand on the Marine Harvest North Division 1 title following their impressive 5-1 win against Lochaber at Spean Bridge. John Stewart, a Martin Stewart penalty and a Ross Lavin goal on the stroke of half time put Kilmallie 3-0 up. Liam MacDonald and Michael Rodger made it 5-0 before Shaun Nicolson scored a consolation goal for Lochaber. Kilmallie’s goal difference is such that they only need to avoid defeat at home to Caberfeidh next weekend to win the title and promotion to shinty’s top flight. Kinlochshiel and Beauly replayed their league match at Kirkton which was abandoned a few weeks ago after 75 minutes with Shiel leading 3-1. This time a Finlay MacRae hat-trick, doubles from Keith MacRae and Fraser MacVicar and a Neil Fraser goal gave ‘Shiel a resounding 8-0 win. Strathglass and Skye Camanachd met at Cannich in what was both sides’ final game of the season. Skye ran out 5-2 winners thanks to a terrific Somhairle MacDonald hat-trick and long range efforts from Danny Morrison and Kenny Campbell. Scott Douglas and substitute Gordon Fraser scored for the home side. The match also marked a welcome return to shinty by ‘Glass player Michael Stokes following a serious accident last year. Marine Harvest South Division 1 The final fixture in Marine Harvest South Division 1 saw Ballachulish beat Lochside Rovers 6-4 at Jubilee Park. David MacPhee bagged a hat-trick for Ballachulish who finish fifth. Marine Harvest North Division 2 Kelvin MacKenzie scored twice as Marine Harvest North Division 2 reigning champions Glenurquhart beat Kinlochshiel 4-1 at Blairbeg. The win takes the Glen to the top of the table on goal difference from Glengarry with a game in hand. Skye Camanachd and Kingussie drew 2-2 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Gavin Munro gave the visitors a first half lead. However a double from substitute Angie MacDonald put Skye ahead before Martin Dallas’ late leveler.
