The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 10 July 2010. | |
13 July 2010 There were only 2 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup quarter finals and a host of postponements on Saturday 10 July 2010. Newtonmore are out of the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup after losing to Kyles Athletic at Tighnabruaich in shinty’s top competition for the second successive season. Kyles seem to save their best performances for this competition and they beat the league leaders 6-3. These old adversaries contested many a Camanachd Cup Final including 8 finals between 1970 and 1980 – with Newtonmore winning 6 times. Newtonmore had Danny MacRae back in the side following his appearance at the Scottish Hydro Premier Sixes last weekend. It was first blood to the visitors as David Cheyne fired them into a 5 minute lead. However Kyles captain Roddy MacDonald struck 3 minutes later to make it 1-1. Cheyne put ‘More ahead for a second time on 15 minutes but again MacDonald scored 3 minutes later to square the match again. Kyles then scored 3 times in 10 minutes to take a significant lead. Thomas Whyte made it 3-2 on 29 minutes and a Colin McColl double on 32 and 39 minutes put them 5-2 ahead. However Danny MacRae capped his comeback with a goal on 44 minutes to leave his side trailing 5-3 at the break. Dunkie Kerr netted the only goal of the second half on 70 minutes to seal a 6-3 win and give last season’s runners up a place in the semi finals. Skye Camanachd’s dream of a final appearance 20 years after their only success is over after they lost 5-1 to Inveraray at the Winterton. The Islanders gave a good account of themselves but Inveraray have a 100% home record this season and they retained the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup a fortnight ago. In the end the home side’s superior fitness and sharpness told in the end. The match had been switched to An Aird – a decision which didn’t please the Oban men - as Oban’s Mossfield pitch was unavailable as it had been booked for a football tournament. Oban had hoped to move the game to the Ganavan but it turned out that the pitch is 4 yards too short. The tie will now take place at Mossfield next weekend along with the remaining quarter final tie between Glenurquhart and Kingussie at Blairbeg. The first Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup semi final also took place at the weekend as Glenurquhart and Kyles Athletic met at Blairbeg. The Glen are already in the final of the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup and they started as favourites to clinch a second final spot against a Kyles side which currently leads Marine Harvest South Division 1. It was Glenurquhart who made it through to their second cup final of the season with a 2-0 win. The Glen scored a goal in each half with Ruaraidh Cameron netting 5 minutes from the break and Ewan Brady getting the other from the penalty spot 10 minutes into the second half. Glenurquhart will face the winners of the tie between Lovat and Kingussie which takes place next weekend. One Scottish Hydro Premier Division fixture took place with 2 vital points up for grabs when Lovat played Bute at Balgate. Lovat were in seventh place before the game, just 2 points out of the relegation zone. They trailed sixth place opponents Bute by 2 points. Lovat missed the influence of suspended forward Fraser Gallagher. This match threw up at the earlier time of 1pm and it was an under-strength Lovat who took the honours with a 2-1 win. Jamie Matheson, who normally plays for the Lovat reserve side, put them ahead after 31 minutes and Bute’s chances suffered a further blow when they had Roberto Zavaroni sent off a minute from the break. Jimmy MacKenzie made it 2-0 on 53 minutes and although a Robert Walker penalty 5 minutes from the end gave Bute hope, Lovat held on to take the points. The win leaves Lovat level on points with sixth place Bute. Marine Harvest North Division 1 second place side Beauly missed the chance to go top when they went down 5-1 to Lochaber at Spean Bridge. Ben Delaney scored a double for the second successive Saturday whilst veteran Angus Morrison, Shaun Nicolson and Scot Patterson got the others. Barry MacDonald replied for Beauly. Michael Delaney’s Lochaber side now go fourth – just behind Kilmallie on goal difference although Kilmallie have a game in hand. Kilmallie returned to the scene of their epic Co-operative MacTavish Cup Final against Kingussie and beat Inverness 8-0 at the Bught. Now that they are out of the cups, Kilmallie can turn their full attention to league duty. Liam MacDonald was fit to play after being withdrawn at the break during last week’s Balliemore Cup semi final defeat to Lochaber. Scottish international John Stewart scored a hat-trick and Robbie MacFadyen, Donald Lamont, Liam MacDonald, Lewis Birrell and Liam Cameron got the others as Kilmallie – who were missing 8 players from their first team squad - climb to third place in the table. The match between Lochcarron and Strathglass at Battery Park was off as the visitors had requested a free weekend as they had several players attending a wedding. The clash between league leaders Kinlochshiel and Caberfeidh at Kirkton was also postponed. Marine Harvest South Division 1 leaders Glenorchy would have been champions if they had picked up just a point against Lochside Rovers but the game was postponed. The match between Kilmory and Ballachulish was also off. A Fraser Inglis inspired Taynuilt beat bottom side Inveraray 8-3 in Fife. The former internationalist scored 4 first half goals on 12, 20, 25 and 43 minutes. Stuart Scott scored for the home side after 22 minutes as did Michael MacQueen who netted 6 minutes later. Neil Gillies scored on 39 minutes as the home side led 7-2 at the break. Fraser MacNicol on 5 minutes and John Slaughter on 11 minutes had actually put Inveraray 2-0 ahead. Inveraray’s MacQueen added his second on 51 minutes to make it 8-2 whilst Chis Watt scored a consolation for the visitors 6 minutes from time. Surprise Marine Harvest North Division 2 leaders Glengarry will have to wait to add to their points tally as their match against Beauly at Braeview Park was postponed. The match between third place Newtonmore and sixth place Lovat at the Eilan was also postponed. The only match that did go ahead was at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree where Skye Camanachd and Fort William shared the points in Portree. Ally MacDonald put Skye ahead on 9 minutes but Josh McGhee made it 1-1 on 39 minutes. MacDonald scored his second on 61 minutes but an Alex Duncan goal 3 minutes from the end gave the side’s a point apiece. The biggest scorers of the day were in Marine Harvest South Division 2 as Stuart Ferrier scored 4 and Dougie Arnott twice as Tayforth thumped Col Glen 9-0 in Perth. Col Glen were 3-1 winners when the sides met earlier in the season but Tayforth showed no mercy in this encounter. Brendan Duggan, Donald Clark and Jamie MacDonald scored their others. Four goals from Duncan MacNicol gave third place Strachur a 4-2 win over Bute. Duncan Simpson scored twice for the Islanders. Keith Neville bagged a brace as Lochaber closed the gap on Marine Harvest North Division 3 leaders Aberdeen University with a 4-1 win over Lochcarron in the noon throw up at Spean Bridge. Neville scored on 22 and 38 minutes to put the home side 2-0 up and an Alan Knox goal on the stroke of half time made it 3-0. Pat Toal made it 4-0 just 3 minutes into the second half whilst Kieran Murray pulled a goal back for Lochcarron on 53 minutes. Lochaber now trail the students by 2 points and have 2 games in hand. Darren MacLeod, Raymond Robertson, Lewis Smith and James Ralph were the scorers as Boleskine were 4-1 winners over Inverness in their local derby at Farr. Cammy Fraser opened the scoring on 6 minutes as Lochbroom beat Ardnamurchan 3-0 in Ullapool. Steven Bellshaw on 65 minutes and Lorne Hughes 5 minutes later got the others. Strathglass were unable to raise a team for their match against Caberfeidh at Castle Leod so the points went to the home side. |
