20 June 2010 Ahead of the weekly Shinty Round Up, the headlines from the shinty matches played on Saturday 19 June 2010 are……….. Co-operative MacTavish Cup Kingussie won the first major shinty honour of the 2010 shinty season with a thrilling 5-4 win over Kilmallie in the Co-operative MacTavish Cup Final at the Bught Park, Inverness. The Kings led 3-1 at the break but Kilmallie fought back brilliantly to lead 4-3 before eventually going down 5-4. Ronald Ross hit a hat-trick for the Kings and Ryan Borthwick scored twice. The Kilmallie goals came from John Stewart, Michael Rodgers and a Liam MacDonald brace, which earned him the man of the match award. Balliemore Cup Kinlochshiel will play either Lochaber or Kilmallie in the Balliemore Cup Final following their 3-2 win over Skye Camanachd in Portree. After a goalless first half, strikes from brothers Keith MacRae and John MacRae put the visitors 2-0 up within 5 minutes of the restart. Kenny Campbell pulled a goal back but Steven Callander made it 3-1 almost immediately. Substitute Iain Morrison pulled it back to 3-2 and Skye had a great chance to take the tie into extra time when they were awarded a penalty in the closing minutes. However Dougie Rankin’s spot hit was saved by Shiel keeper Graham Kennedy. Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Kyles Athletic secured the last Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup semi final spot with victory over Skye Camanachd at Tighnabruaich. A goal in each half from Ewan MacDonald and Angus Finlayson gave them a 2-0 victory against an under-strength Skye side. Scottish Hydro Premier Division League leaders Newtonmore beat struggling Glenurquhart 2-1 in a noon throw up at the Eilan. A John Barr own goal gave ‘More the lead and Glen MacKintosh made it 2-0 in the second half. David MacLennan pulled a goal back on 72 minutes but ‘More held on despite having Paul MacArthur sent off 5 minutes from time. Fort William beat Lovat for the second consecutive Saturday at Balgate. Gary Innes scored twice in their 4-0 victory. Glasgow Mid Argyll showed that their recent win over Glenurquhart was no fluke with an impressive 3-1 win over Bute at Rothesay. Andy Mathie scored the only goal against the Glen and was the hero again with a hat-trick. Oban Camanachd went down 4-0 to Inveraray at Mossfield Park. Russell MacKinlay scored a double to move his side into third place. Marine Harvest North Division 1 Beauly and Lochcarron shared the points in their Friday night clash at Braeview Park with all the goals coming in the first half. Lochcarron took the lead on 25 minutes with Mark Sproule the scorer. However a Jack MacDonald goal 5 minutes from half time ensured a share of the points. Strathglass and Caberfeidh also drew 1-1 at Cannich. Marine Harvest South Division 1 League leaders Glenorchy made it a straight 9 league wins when they beat Ballachulish 3-2 in a tight match at Jubilee Park. John McNulty scored the winner just 5 minutes from time. The spoils in the Oban derby went to second place Oban Celtic who beat Lochside Rovers 6-3. David Duffy and Allan Duffy both scored twice for Celtic. The match between Kilmory beat Taynuilt was postponed because of a bereavement. Marine Harvest North Division 2 League leaders Glengarry beat Lovat 2-1 at Balgate. Second place Fort William went down to a shock 3-2 defeat to beat bottom side Beauly at An Aird. Father and son Steven MacLean and David MacLean were amongst the Beauly scorers and the win lifts them off the bottom of the table. Chris Sellar scored 4 times as Newtonmore thumped Kinlochshiel 7-0 at the Eilan to move into third place. Marine Harvest South Division 2 Strachur and Aberdour drew 1-1 at Home Farm. Ross Nicol put the visitors ahead but Reece Campbell levelled for Strachur on the half hour mark. Second bottom Tayforth were awarded the points as second top Glasgow Mid Argyll were unable to raise a team for their meeting in Perth. Marine Harvest North Division 3 With Lochaber not in action, pace-setters Aberdeen University took the chance to increase their lead at the top of the table with a 7-3 win over Strathglass at Cannich. Former Skye Camanachd duo Kenny MacLeod and Jamie Beaton were amongst the goals. MacLeod scored 4 whilst Beaton bagged a double. Lochcarron went down 3-0 to Caberfeidh at Battery Park. Alan Ross, Gary MacLennan and Iain MacDonald got the goals. |
