Strathglass 4 The Highlanders 3. | |
30 May 2010 Strathglass played army shinty side The Highlanders on the evening of Saturday 29 May 2010 at Cannich in a memorial to former player Scott Bain who died last year. Scott Bain died in a road accident the day after Strathglass won the 2009 Balliemore Cup Final against Kinlochshiel. Although he was not part of the cup final squad, Scott played shinty for both Strathglass and the army side. The Bain family were in attendance at the tribute match and Scott’s brother Lee Bain, who plays for the Kingussie first team, played a half for each side. There was heavy rain throughout the game but that didn’t dampen the players’ spirits. The army side gave a very good account of themselves and the match really was as close as the scoreline suggests. Skye Camanachd’s Darryl MacIntosh played well for them at full centre and Strathglass player Andrew Fraser played at buckshee back for The Highlanders even though he has just left the army. Raymond Fraser was kept busy in goal and made several good saves. In the end doubles from Robert Geddes and Garry Reid canceled out goals from Lee Bain, former Scotland Head Coach Fraser MacKenzie and former Skye Camanachd player Ronnie MacKinnon. There was also a collection by some of the Strath’s younger players – many of whom were contemporaries of Scott and Lee – towards the purchase of a bench which they are planning to purchase in Scott’s memory. The bench will be sited near the shinty pitch at Cannich and the idea for this has come from the players themselves. |
