Oban Camanachd President Hits Out At Sports Pitch Hire Costs. | |
06 April 2010 Oban Camanachd President Nigel Evans as hit out at what he describes as “unacceptable” sports pitch hire costs set by Argyll & Bute Council.
In a letter to the Oban Times, Oban Camanachd are unhappy with the increased charges for the Council’s sporting facilities.
Evans said, “As a main user of the Council’s sports pitches, Oban Camanachd finds the level of increase unacceptable. We have 5 teams within the club and have a responsibility to provide proper facilities for these teams to train and play.”
The club President pointed out that the cost increases would play additional burden on shinty volunteers and sponsors. “To offset these costs, the club has a weekly lotto and also attracts sponsorship thanks to the goodwill of local businesses. The increase proposed by the Council, which almost doubles the present cost, would be an added burden to the volunteers and team coaches who give their time up so freely.”
Evans called on the Council to look at the wider picture by adding, “The Council has to recognise when making such decisions that Oban Camanachd provide the youths of Oban with an opportunity to play at the to level of their chosen sport. This increase many deny them the opportunity and that is the responsibility the Council must consider when deliberating over this important issue. The impact felt by these charges may have a lasting effect on sport in Oban for years to come.” |
