The shinty community was saddened to hear of the passing of Peter Cullen on Wednesday 7 December 2011.
Peter Cullen was best known in shinty circles as Commercial Director of drinks giants Glenmorangie who were major shinty sponsors for decades.
Glenmorangie are best recognised in shinty circles as sponsors the Camanachd Cup for a 29 year period which ended in 2005. However they also sponsored many other shinty events including the Balliemore and Sutherland Cups, the U21 Shinty / Hurling internationals and the popular Indoor Aviemore Sixes.
Peter Cullen was a familiar face at shinty events and he often presented the Camanachd Cup, and an extremely impressive magnum of Glenmorangie's finest, to the winning Camanachd Cup captain. This included the presentation of the famous trophy to Skye Camanachd captain Caley MacLean (see picture) following the Islanders 4-1 final win over Newtonmore at An Aird, Fort William in 1990.
Peter Cullen stood down an Executive Director of Glenmorangie in June 2000 after almost 29 years' service. At the time, Glenmorangie plc Chairman Geoffrey Maddrell commented, "Peter Cullen has established a formidable and well justified reputation throughout the Scotch Whisky industry and has served the company with great loyalty and devotion for nearly 29 years, most of which in an important executive capacity. We shall miss him and wish him well."
Peter passed away peacefully at Astley Ainsley Hospital on Wednesday 7 December 2011 and a small private funeral was held at Warriston Crematorium on Monday 12 December 2011.
The Camanachd Association recognised Peter's contribution to shinty by making him a Patron of the Association and the thoughts of the shinty community go out to his extended family.
